DAVIDSON, N.C. —
A balanced offensive and defensive effort Thursday night helped carry Davidson to a 14-10 victory at home in its Atlantic 10 opener against La Salle in women's lacrosse at Richardson Stadium.

The Wildcats won their fourth straight to improve to 6-3 on the season and moved to 2-2 in A-10 openers all-time, defeating La Salle (4-5, 0-1 A-10) for the third consecutive year. The four-game win streak is the longest since a nine-game stretch in 2014.

Nine players registered at least one point on the night for Davidson, while the defense scooped up game highs of 26 groundballs, forced nine turnovers and stopped 16 shots in goal.

The difference in the game proved to be the first half when the Wildcats, behind Jordan Wood, took a 5-1 lead at the break. Wood scored the first three goals of the game and added one more with four minutes left in the half for the four-goal lead. The four goals on the night for the sophomore gave her a team-best 25.

Both teams played to an even 9-all draw in the second half. The 'Cats led by as many as eight (11-3) after Genna Portner netted her 10th goal of the season off an Olivia Carey assist with 15:24 on the clock. Carey finished with a team season-high five assists and added a goal for six points, a personal best.

Davidson maintained at least a seven-goal advantage until the last eight minutes when La Salle went on a 4-1 run, getting only as close as the final score. In all, the Explorers would score seven of the final 10 in the last 14 minutes.

Joining Carey and Wood in the points column was Sophia Sgroi and Portner with three goals each. Tess Reiman had a goal and an assist off the bench, while three other 'Cats added one assist each.

The Explorers' Mikki Raymond and Bridget Ruskey registered three goals apiece, with Raymond adding an assist. Emily Johnston scored twice to go with two assists.

Senior Rose Woolson was stellar between the pipes again for the Wildcats, stopping 16 shots, nine of them in the first half, to go with eight groundballs (tied personal best) and a forced turnover. The 16 saves push her season total to 98, while she has a team-high 34 groundballs.

Defender Lindsay Rufolo forced a career-high three turnovers to go with three groundballs and Rachel Hianik had three groundballs and two forced turnovers. Natalie Junior tied her season best with five draw controls to go with a caused turnover.

La Salle had a 34-32 edge in shots, but the 'Cats won the battle of draw controls at 14-12 and went 24-for-28 on clear attempts.

Davidson will next face UMass on the road in an A-10 game this weekend, March 31, at 12 p.m.
