DAVIDSON, N.C. – A three-run eighth inning catapulted Davidson baseball to its second league series win of the year, taking the Sunday contest with Saint Joseph's 5-3 at Wilson Field.
The 'Cats move back to .500 at 13-13 (4-5 A-10), while SJU slips to 6-14 (1-2 A-10).
Senior Jake Sidwell and sophomore Max Bazin each went 2-for-4 in the contest, while veteran Will Robertson cranked his third homer of the year, a solo shot in the eighth that tied the game after the Hawks had stolen the lead the frame before.
Senior closer Westin Whitmire picked up his second win of the year and added two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
Davidson took control first, plating two runs in the bottom of the third. After the SJU starter had cruised through the first two innings, facing the minimum in each, Bazin reached on a fielder's choice (classmate Justin Lebek had boarded via hit-by-pitch). He then scored on a beautifully hit double from designated hitter Tyler Agard. Agard himself came around after a single to left center from junior Alec Acosta.
The Hawks cut the lead in half the following frame, using a sequence of singles to get on the board. They then scored again in the seventh, taking advantage of a two-base throwing error on a failed pick-off attempt and coming home on a sacrifice fly.
SJU took the lead in the eighth off a solo shot to right field, and Davidson quickly responded. Robertson wasted no time tying the game back up, taking the first pitch of the inning and sending it sailing over the left field wall.
Sophomore Eric Jones followed that up with a hard hit single to the shortstop, also on the first pitch, and moved to third on Sidwell's connection through the right side gap. Looking for his first hit of the day, Lebek too took the first pitch of the at bat and mashed the ball to left center, bringing home Jones. Bazin took a little more time at the plate, but his patience paid off, as he sent one through the right side to bring home Sidwell and give the 'Cats some extra cushion at 5-3.
Whitmire, who entered with one out in the eighth, returned for the ninth and sealed the victory, fanning the Hawks on a four-pitch strikeout. Things looked scary to begin the frame, as the Hawks sent one sailing to left center, but Cats' center fielder Cam Johnson made a fantastic robbing catch at the wall to contain the threat.
Southpaw Andrew Ashur also had an impressive outing on the mound, picking up back-to-back looking Ks to get the 'Cats through a jam.
Davidson returns to action next weekend, heading out for its first road series of the year. The Wildcats travel to Philadelphia to face La Salle in a three-game conference stint.
