RICHMOND, Va. – Despite collecting 10 hits in their Saturday contest with VCU, Davidson baseball fell 14-0 and drops to 18-14 (8-6 A-10) on the season. The Rams improve to 20-15 (9-2 A-10), with the series on the line for Sunday.
Sophomore Eric Jones turned in his second-straight three hit outing, while senior Will Robertson and junior Alec Acosta each collected two hits apiece. Jones and Robertson are each hitting above .500 in their career versus VCU.
Davidson started the game sharp, after loading the bases by way of a Robertson hit, Acosta reaching on error, and Jones singling to left field, but were unable to get anything across.
The Rams, eager to seek revenge from Friday, started their opening frame with the same intensity, plating five runs off of five hits, including a two-run homer to the second batter of the game.
They added to their lead in the fifth, using four hits and error to score four times and make it 9-0. The Rams went on to score in each the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to secure the 14-0 victory.
The 'Cats, suffering just their fourth shutout of the season, looked to threaten again in the sixth, after Jones led off the inning with a double and classmate Justin Lebek singled into shallow right, but both were left on.
The two teams will face off in the rubber match Sunday, slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
