RICHMOND, Va. – A powerful pitching performance from senior Durin O'Linger and another impressive day the plate from classmate Will Robertson propelled Davidson baseball to a 5-4 victory Friday on the road at VCU.
With the win, the Wildcats move to 18-13 on the year and 8-5 in the A-10, while the Rams slip to 19-15 and 8-2 in league action.
O'Linger delivered his longest outing of the year, tossing seven strong innings, picking up seven strikeouts. Robertson smashed his sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot over left field in the third inning that got the 'Cats on the board. He went on to tally another RBI on a fielder's choice in the eighth and scored twice.
Sophomore Eric Jones turned in his second three-hit performance of the season, while seniors Jake Sidwell and Tyler Agard each registered two hits apiece. Closer Westin Whitmire picked up his league-leading seventh save of the season.
After junior Cam Johnson boarded via walk in the third, Robertson launched the ball over the left field wall to get Davidson started. The homerun was his fourth in his last six games, and marking his sixth game with an extra-base hit out of the last seven.
VCU used a pair of doubles in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead in half, and the narrow lead remained until the fifth, when the 'Cats struck again.
Robertson led off the inning with a walk, and moved all the way to third on a chopper base hit down the first base line from Sidwell. He came around to score from fellow veteran Brian Fortier, who singled into shallow right. Jones then followed up with one his connections, dropping the ball into right field, again, and moving everyone up. Sophomore Justin Lebek then jumped aboard the train, singling into center field and bringing Sidwell home, giving the 'Cats some 4-1 insurance.
Davidson plated another run in the eighth for some extra cushion, a run that would prove to be necessary later in the contest. Freshman designated hitter Brett Centracchio was hit-by-pitch to lead off the frame, and after Agard singled him to third, came home thanks to Robertson and Johnson. Robertson pushed the ball to the right side of the field in what looked to potentially be an inning-ending double play, but Johnson, already out, slid into second to delay the Rams and allow Robertson to reach first.
With one out in the ninth, VCU threatened, recording back-to-back one out singles. After a strikeout, another Rams single brought in a run, and they scored two more times on a single hit to deep center.
With the tying run on third, Whitmire induced an infield ground ball and the 'Cats kept the victory intact.
O'Linger improved to 3-2 on the season, while the league's leader in wins, VCU's Sean Thompson, suffered the loss.
Davidson and VCU return to action Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
