DAVIDSON, N.C. – Another standout performance from reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Will Robertson paced Davidson baseball, as they cruised to a 12-6 victory Tuesday over Appalachian State at Wilson Field. Every run but one that the Wildcats scored Tuesday came with two outs.
The 'Cats move to 17-13 on the season, while App drops to 12-21.
Robertson went 4-for-5, while bringing in three runs and scoring three times. He launched a solo homerun to left center and also doubled, making it his fifth game with an extra-base hit out of the last six. Classmate Brian Fortier collected four RBI on a 3-for-5 day after launching a towering grand slam over left field, while freshman Brett Centracchio turned in two doubles (both by way of ground rule) and two runs, and sophomore Max Bazin recorded two hits and scored twice.
The 'Cats began the contest behind, after back-to-back walks loaded the bases for a Mountaineer grand slam to put them up 4-0.
Davidson quickly responded, mirroring App. After Bazin led off the third inning with a walk, Robertson and junior Alec Acosta both singled to load the bases, Fortier blasted his 10th round-trip of the season and second in the last three contests.
Knotted up at 4-4, the Wildcats continued to push the tempo. After Fortier cleared the bases, sophomore Eric Jones took first on a walk, moved to third on a single from sophomore Justin Lebek, and came home on a Centracchio double. Lebek then also came home, thanks to a Bazin chopper back to third base, and then Centracchio scored courtesy of a single dropped perfectly down the right field line from freshman Zach Nussbaum.
Up 7-4, the 'Cats added insurance in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, scoring twice in each the fifth and seventh.
Robertson took the first pitch of the inning and homered in the fourth- his fifth of the year and third in the last five games- and then doubled home both Centracchio and Bazin in the fifth. He and classmate Tyler Agard (who reached via error) both came home in the seventh, courtesy of a Jones hard single back up the middle.
App tried to chip away, plating a run in both the fifth and ninth innings, but ultimately fell 12-6.
Senior reliever Cody White picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the year, where he went two innings and struck out three.
Davidson returns to action Friday, heading out on the road for a three-game conference stint against VCU in Richmond, Va.
