DAVIDSON, N.C. – Freshman Max Bazin went 3-for-4 with one run scored to lead the Davidson baseball team to a 7-4 victory over George Washington Saturday at Wilson Field.
In addition to Bazin, Durin O'Linger retired nine-straight batters to hold the Colonials scoreless in his final three innings on the mound.
The win improved O'Linger to 4-2 on the season as the junior allowed four runs – one earned – off eight hits with three strikeouts in eight innings. Westin Whitmire closed out the game as he retired the final three Colonials with one strikeout for his sixth save of the season.
Shane Sweeney (2-2) pitched the first five innings for George Washington, allowing seven runs – all earned – off 11 hits with one strikeout for the loss. Luke Olson pitched the final three innings in relief and allowed only two hits.
Davidson (17-14, 5-3 A-10) out hit George Washington (12-20, 3-2 A-10), 13-8, as Brian Fortier (2-for-3, 2 runs scored) and Alec Acosta (2-for-3, 2 RBI) joined Bazin with multiple-hit performances.
Both teams got off to a hot start, recording a combined five runs in the first at bats. Trailing 2-0, Davidson started off with back-to-back singles before a hit bats man that loaded the bases. Acosta sparked the scoring drive off a sacrifice fly before a double from Sam Foy made it a 3-2 ballgame.
It was a back-and-forth contest throughout the next four innings, before Davidson clinched the victory in the sixth.
The Wildcats started off the inning with back-to-back singles before Andrew Born came in to pinch-hit and singled down the left line that scored two for the win.
Both teams will return to Wilson Field tomorrow, April 10 for the series finale at 1 p.m.
