Davidson Falls to Saint Joseph’s in Series Finale

MERION STATION, Pa. – The Davidson baseball team fell to the Saint Joseph's Hawks, 10-1, Sunday at Smithson Field in the final game of the weekend series.
The loss drops the Wildcats, who had already clinched the series with sweeping the first two contests, to 16-12 on the season and 4-2 in the Atlantic 10.
Saint Joseph's (12-12, 3-3 A-10) out hit Davidson, 12-6, while the Wildcats committed two errors compared to the Hawks' one. Marc Giacalone led both teams with three hits, two RBI and three runs scored in five at bats.
Andrew Born led Davidson with a 2-for-4 performance with one RBI.
Tim Brennan (3-0) recorded the win for the Hawks, allowing one run off six hits with 10 strikeouts in eight innings. Ryan Kelly appeared in relief and pitched a silent final inning.
Casey Sutherland started the first 2.2 innings for the 'Cats, limiting SJU to just two hits with two strikeouts. Evan Roberts (1-3) appeared in relief allowing seven runs - two earned - off seven hits with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings for the loss.
Josh Smutzer also made an appearance, pitching the final inning and allowing three runs off three hits with a strikeout.
The Hawks got on board first after a lead off single from Charlie Concannon, who later scored off a two-out triple from Brian Lau in the fourth.
The Wildcats responded in the fifth after Alec Acosta led off with a double down the third base line. The shortstop was brought in off a single to tie the ballgame at one. But Saint Joseph's took back the lead, 2-1, in the next at bat off two hits, including a double from Deon Stafford.
The Hawks took control of the contest in the sixth when they scored five runs off three hits, including two doubles, and a Davidson error to take a 7-1 lead.
Saint Joseph's picked up three more runs off two homeruns in the eighth that secured the ballgame.
The Wildcats will return home Tuesday, April 5 when it hosts Wake Forest at 6 p.m.
