DAVIDSON, N.C. – Nick Neitzel's career day on the mound helped the Davidson baseball team to its fourth-straight victory with a 6-3 win over Elon Tuesday night at Wilson Field.
The senior recorded a career-high eight strikeouts and held the Phoenix scoreless for the first five innings of play. Neitzel's eight strikeouts consisted of six straight, including three looking in the first two innings.
Neitzel finished the day allowing just two hits while facing 21 batters.
Despite committing four errors, the Wildcats outhit Elon, 9-5, while the Phoenix tallied two errors. Ryan Lowe and left fielder Will Robertson led both squads with two hits, one run and one RBI, while shortstop Alec Acosta also picked up a 2-for-4 performance with one run scored. Three other Wildcats recorded a hit, including right fielder Lee Miller with a two-RBI double.
After a quiet first two innings, Davidson got on board with a solo homerun from first baseman David Daniels to give the 'Cats early momentum in the third.
Acosta started the inning off with a double to left center in Davidson's next at bat. The Wildcats completed the fourth with a 3-0 lead with two runs off two hits and a Phoenix error.
The two teams traded three runs and an error in the seventh, but two singles and Miller's double was enough for Davidson to secure the win.
In addition to Neitzel, four other Wildcats saw the mound for Davidson. Following freshman RHP Connor Gordon's 1.2 innings, freshman LHP Evan Roberts faced four batters in the seventh to record the win. After a RHP Westin Whitmire appearance, senior RHP Matt Saeta closed out the contest, recording two strikeouts for his third save this season.
Two Phoenix came to the mound for Elon, including LHP Jake Stalzer who allowed five runs off eight hits with a strikeout in the first 6.1 innings for the loss.
The fourth-straight win puts the 'Cats 22-16 overall, while Elon fell to 22-21 on the season.
Davidson looks to continue its six-game Atlantic 10 win streak when it travels to George Mason for a weekend series starting Friday at 3 p.m.
