DAVIDSON, N.C. – Off to a five-game unbeaten streak for the second straight season, No. 20 Davidson will continue its longest road swing of the 2014 campaign with a 7 p.m. contest at No. 2 Virginia Wednesday evening at Klöckner Stadium.
"Winning big games takes making plays of course – and that requires ability, poise, and execution," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "But I would suggest that even more important is belief and mentality."
Coming off a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Liberty over the weekend, the Wildcats enter 3-0-2 overall. Trailing 1-0 at the half, Davidson got second-half strikes from George Kaloudis (67') and Maxi Pragnell (86') to hand the Flames their first loss.
Alan Reiter, Valeriy Sviderskiy and Pragnell lead the Wildcat attack with two goals each. A total of six different Davidson players have scored this year, while Shane Macnamara has set up a team-best three goals.
A six-time National Champion and 2013 NCAA semifinalist, Virginia comes in 4-1-1 following a 1-1 draw to reigning NCAA Champion Notre Dame Sunday at home.
Despite averaging just a goal per contest, the Cavaliers have only allowed three goals through the first six games, while recording three shutouts.
"We want our guys to be bold and to go for it. So we will try and win the match, not just stop the opponent. Our focus is less on scouting the opponent and more on preparing for and striving for peak performances," Spear commented.
The two teams have met six times on the pitch, including a 1-0 win by Virginia off a penalty kick in their last meeting during the 2006 season.
Davidson will continue its four-game road trip Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. contest against in-state foe Campbell in Buies Creek.
