CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In addition to goals from Alan Reiter and Max Riehemann early in the second half, Matt Pacifici was outstanding in goal as the No. 20/-- Davidson Wildcats knocked off No. 3/2 Virginia, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Klöckner Stadium.
"UVA is tough place to win so super proud of our guys effort and performance," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "The players worked their socks off and it was another comeback win. And I know it helps a lot of people outside our team to believe Davidson can elevate and achieve at the highest levels."
Off to their longest unbeaten streak since the 1982 season, the Wildcats improve to 4-0-2, while the 'Hoos fall to 4-2-1.
This is Davidson's first win over a ranked opponent since it upset No. 2 North Carolina, 2-1, Oct. 17, 2011 at Alumni Stadium.
After threatening with a number of chances in the first half, including a shot by John Pace that caromed off the post, Reiter provided a 51st minute equalizer. The senior's blast into the lower left corner and team-leading third goal of the campaign came off an assist from Maxi Pragnell.
Less than eight minutes later, Riehemann couldn't have picked a better time to score his first goal since netting three as a freshman in 2011. The eventual game-winner came off a Pace corner kick that Reiter headed on to Riehemann.
Virginia, a six-time National Champion and 2013 NCAA semifinalist, grabbed a 1-0 advantage at the 19:12 mark when Nicko Corriveau put away a feed from fellow midfielder Luc Fatton. Corriveau's first strike of the year was heavily deflected, then redirected just out of the reach of Pacifici.
Both teams attempted six shots in the opening half before the Cavaliers finished with a 15-10 margin, while the Wildcats held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Pacifici made a number of big stops down the stretch to record a game-high six saves for Davidson, which entered the polls last week for the first time since 2009.
The Wildcats will continue their four-game road trip Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. contest against in-state foe Campbell in Buies Creek.
Postgame Comments
Matt Pacifici, Junior, Goalkeeper
"I've never seen the guys go into such a big game with this much confidence and it really paid off. Once we established our tempo early on, we knew we could win the game despite going a goal down. The second half really showed our team's grit both in finding the go ahead goal and doing whatever was necessary to see the game off in the final minutes."
Max Riehemann, Senior, Defender
"I think it's another demonstration of our resiliency. Being our third come-from-behind win, we have a group of guys that fully believe in each other and are willing to put the work in to get the result. I have a ton of confidence in our play right now and our depth.
"In regards to the goal, it's kind of a blur but the ball fell to my feet in a position where I knew if I kept it on frame it would hit the back of the net. I made sure I connected well, and the next thing I knew I was being mobbed by my teammates. It's truly a great feeling knowing all these guys have my back and I have theirs."
Alan Reiter, Senior, Midfielder
"Biggest win of my life. I'm extremely proud of the guys for our performance tonight - especially in the second half. We came into this game with confidence and momentum and gained more of both, which we will bring to Campbell on Saturday. We got a huge game winning goal from Max Riehemann tonight and solid contributions overall from everyone who stepped on the field. For my goal, Maxi Pragnell played a great ball across the box that popped out to me inside the 18. I hit it cleanly first-time and it hit the back of the net."
Shane Macnamara, Junior, Midfielder
"I pride myself on work rate and I had it tonight. Offensively not too involved, but the game didn't demand that I be that."
"Proud of the team's resilience. It's tough to have such great chances early on, not convert any, and then go down a goal."
"We kept pushing for a full 90-minute performance, and I believe the team took a step closer to accomplishing that. On top of that, we gained valuable experience in closing out a game on the road."
