Wildcats Fall to No. 10 Stanford, 5-1, in NorPac Tournament

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Becky Johnson notched her first career goal as the fourth-seeded Wildcat field hockey team fell by a score of 5-1 to the top-seeded No. 10 Stanford Cardinal in the first round of the 2013 NorPac Tournament at the Liberty Field Hockey Field Thursday evening.

Davidson (6-13, 2-6 NorPac) will face either No. 2E Longwood or No. 3W Pacific Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. in a consolation game.

Tyler McFayden led the Wildcats with a pair of shots, one of which came on goal. In addition to Johnson, Melissa Funsten and Brooke Osborne each recorded an attempt as Davidson was outshot 15-5.

Davidson keeper Carolyn Macek made five stops in the contest.

Alex McCawley had a pair of goals on four shots in leading the Cardinal. Kelsey Harbin and Maddie Secco each had a goal and an assist, while Jessica Chisholm had a goal on a pair of shots. Stanford claimed a 6-2 advantage on penalty corners.

Stanford took a 1-0 lead on an early goal by Secco, but the Wildcat defense clamped down for the next 20 minutes to keep it a close contest. With just over 10 minutes to go in the half, Harbin knocked in a shot by Kasey Quon to give the Cardinal a 2-0 advantage at the half.

Chisholm started the scoring off five minutes into the second half off a pass from Harbin as Stanford took a 3-0 lead. McCawley tallied a pair of back-to-back goals midway through the final stanza as the Cardinal went up 5-0 with 20 minutes to play.

The Wildcats got on the board with just under five to go to break the shutout attempt by Stanford. McFayden put up a shot that was saved by Davies, with Johnson controlling the rebound and sending it in by the left post. Osborne would then have an attempt blocked in the final seconds of play as the Cats took the 5-1 loss.Â
