RADFORD, Va. – Radford became the first team to hold Davidson under three goals this season, but one was all the Wildcats needed as Sarah Fisher made a career-high 10 saves to give Davidson a 1-0 victory over the Highlanders in NorPac field hockey action Wednesday night at RU Hockey Field.
Senior midfielder Clare Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored the game-winner for Davidson (6-2, 1-0 NorPac East) on a direct corner at 25:13 with junior midfielder Gray Robinson (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore midfielder Annie Evans (Lake Forest, Ill.) earning the assists.
Fisher (Fredricksburg, Va.) earned her third shutout of the season and the team's fourth.
“We struggled in the beginning and we allowed too many corners but our defense held strong and Fisher had an excellent game,” said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. “We are glad to get that win, and we know it will be an intense game when Radford plays us at home in October.”
Davidson, which has received votes for the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Top 20 National Coaches Poll for the past three weeks, is off to its best start since 1999 when they also started 6-2.
Radford (6-3, 0-1 NorPac East) controlled play early, outshooting Davidson 6-0 in the first 24 minutes, but Evans got the Wildcats on track in the 25th minute, putting a shot on goal. The play ultimately resulted in a Davidson penalty corner attempt started by Evans and stopped for Perry by Robinson. Perry then blasted the ball into the back of the cage for her third goal of the season.
The Wildcats kept the pressure on offensively until the end of the first half to take an 8-7 advantage in shots, but Radford goalkeeper Jennifer Wisniewski prevented the 'Cats from extending their lead.
Radford outshot Davidson 7-2 in second half, but Fisher made four saves to preserve the lead. The Wildcats fended off a total of 14 Highlander penalty corner attempts for the game. Radford finished with the advantage in shots, 14-10, and corners, 14-7.
Evans led Davidson with four shots, three of which were on goal. Marlee Schramm, Lara Cariker, Madonna Wadolowski and Courtney Poole each had three shots, two on goal, for Radford. Wisniewski finished with eight saves.
Davidson and Radford will meet again October 29 at the Wildcats' Belk Turf Field in what will be the second-to-last game of the regular season for Davidson and a critcal NorPac contest.
The Wildcats will return home and play back-to-back matches this weekend, taking on Richmond, Saturday at 12 p.m. and Georgetown, Sunday at 1 p.m.
Notes: Davidson's four shutouts this season surpasses last year's total of three and is the most since 2003 … the win is Davidson's first in a NorPac opener since 2006 … junior forward Christine Rua was held without a goal or assist for the first time this season … Robinson has tallied a goal and/or assist in each of the last six games.
