Rua scores with one second remaining in regulation to tie game

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior forward Christine Rua scored for Davidson with exactly one second remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime, and junior midfielder Gray Robinson knocked in the game-winning goal nine minutes into the extra frame to give the Wildcats a 3-2 victory over Richmond Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.

The win improves Davidson's record to 7-2, marking their best start since 1992.

Senior forward Jennie Mostellar (New Bern, N.C.) tallied two assists for Davidson, assisting on Robinson's (Louisville, Ky.) overtime-winner and sophomore forward Finley Amato's first half goal. Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) earned the assist on the game-tying goal scored by Rua (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) made a career-high 11 saves.

Dani Pycroft and Katelin Peterson scored for Richmond (3-6), with Peterson earning an assist on Pycroft's goal.

Richmond appeared to have the game in hand in the second period, as they overcame a 1-0 deficit with a pair of goals. Pycroft evened the game just under 10 minutes into the second with a shot from the right that went just inside the left post. Peterson then put the Spiders on top with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, chipping a shot from the top of the circle into the top left corner of the cage.

Davidson did not quit though, as Amato and Rua trapped a Richmond player in the right corner of the Richmond defensive zone in the final seconds, and managed to steal the ball. Rua went to the front of the cage, where Amato found her with a pass, and Rua blasted it in for the game-tying goal with 00:01 displaying on the scoreboard.

The Wildcats fended off two penalty corners in overtime before notching the game-winner. The Davidson attack kept the pressure on Richmond goalkeeper Ann Jefferis, and Mostellar was able to send a rebound off her own shot over to Robinson, who knocked it in for the sudden-victory win.

Davidson had carried a 1-0 led into the second half after Amato scored in the 10th minute of the game. Mostellar sent a pass across the cage to the right post, where Amato tipped it in.

Richmond held slim advantages in shots, 21-19, and penalty corners, 10-9. Jefferis finished with seven saves.

Davidson returns to action Sunday, when they host Georgetown at 1 p.m.

Notes: The overtime win was Davidson's first since Sept. 4, 2009, when Amato scored the game-winner at Georgetown (tomorrow's opponent) … for the eighth time this season, Davidson scored at least three goals in a game … they remain on pace to break the team's single-season scoring record of 52 goals … Amato leads the team in scoring with seven goals and four assists (18 points) … Rua has scored a goal and/or assist in all but one game this season ... Robinson has scored a goal and/or assist in each of the last seven games ... the Wildcats have scored 30 goals in nine games after scoring 33 in 19 games last season … the 1992 team that started 7-2 finished at 15-2-1 and won the Deep South Championship.
