Fisher, Amato Lead Davidson Field Hockey to Penalty Stroke Win Over Georgetown

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore forward Finley Amato scored Davidson field hockey's lone goal in regulation and ended the strokeoff, while goalkeeper Sarah Fisher made key saves to give the Wildcats a 2-1 penalty stroke win over Georgetown on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.

Davidson (8-2) and Georgetown (5-5) scored in the fifth and seventh minutes, respectively, but that was all both teams could muster, playing two 15-minute overtime periods before going to a best-of-five penalty stroke competition, which Davidson won 4-2.

“It was a hard game for us as we were tired after going to overtime yesterday, and Georgetown came out strong,” said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. “This was the first time all year where we struggled to finish scoring chances, so it is an experience we will learn from. But I am proud that we came through for the win.”

Of Davidson's first three penalty stroke attempts, senior Clare Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and freshman Brooke Osborne (Fort Worth, Texas) both converted, and Georgetown also converted two-of-three to knot the competition at two. Junior midfielder Gray Robinson (Louisville, Ky.) lifted a shot into the top of the cage to put the Wildcats back on top, and then Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) stopped Sophia Pifer's attempt to keep Davidson ahead. Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) then converted her attempt to secure the win.

Amato scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season at 4:18, knocking a rebound into the back of the cage. The Hoyas responded though, scoring just under two minutes later. Annie Wilson passed across the circle to Catherine Shugrue, who knocked it in to even the match.

The Wildcats held a 13-3 advantage in shots and a 15-5 advantage in penalty corners in the second half, but were unable to finish several close opportunities. Overtime shots were even at five apiece, with Georgetown holding a 4-2 advantage in the second bonus frame.

Wilson got open on a breakaway in the second overtime but Fisher came out to challenge her, and knocked the ball away. Wilson regained possession with Fisher out of position, but Perry got back in time to sweep away Wilson's second chance.

“Fisher had great game for us,” said Turner. “She made some key saves and came up with a big stop in the penalty strokes.”

Fisher finished with nine saves, while Brianna Pereira made 14 stops for Georgetown. Ai Nishinio and Sophia Pifer both recorded defensive saves for the Hoyas. Davidson finished with a 26-15 advantage in shots.

Senior Jennie Mostellar led Davidson with six shots, five on goal. Wilson led the Hoyas with seven shots, five of which were on goal.

Davidson will return to NorPac competition Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Longwood at Belk Turf Field.

Notes: Davidson was held under three goals for just the second time this season, but the 'Cats have prevailed in both contests … Georgetown and Davidson went into overtime in 2009, with Annie Evans scoring the game-winning goal in the first overtime period.
