'Cats Meet Spiders Thursday in Atlantic 10 Tourney
11/5/2025 10:42:00 PM | Field Hockey
For the first time in a decade, the Davidson field hockey team is in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.
The Wildcats secured the No. 4 spot in the four-team postseason event when they defeated Saint Louis 5-0 on Halloween night, and they'll meet top-seeded Richmond on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Davidson (10-8 overall, 3-3 A-10) closed the regular season Sunday with a 3-1 non-conference win over Queens. With that victory, the Wildcats secured their 10th win and a winning record for the first time since the 2011 team went 11-9.
LATEST ON THE 'CATS
• Davidson is in the A-10 postseason for just the second time since joining the league in 2014 and is seeking its first victory in the event (0-1).
• The Wildcats' only other appearance came in 2015, when they went 5-3 during the A-10 regular season, finished in a three-way tie for second, entered as the No. 4 seed and lost to top-seeded Richmond 2-1 in the four-team tournament in Philadelphia.
• With a 5-4 win at William & Mary Oct. 5, the Wildcats secured at least seven wins for the third straight year after going 7-11 in 2023 and 7-8 last season.
• In September, the Wildcats posted a five-game win streak, the team's longest since 2010.
• In A-10 play, Davidson owns wins over La Salle (3-2 on Sept. 19), Lock Haven (5-1 on Sept. 26) and Saint Louis.
SIB-LY THE BEST
• Senior Sib Naaktgeboren continues to make Davidson field hockey history.
• On Wednesday, the Netherlands-born forward became the first Wildcat to earn one of the A-10's major awards when she was named A-10 Offensive Player of the Year.
• She is the league leader in goals (20) and points (46), and she captured those single-season program records last weekend.
• Additionally, Naaktgeboren was named to the A-10 First Team (after back-to-back Second Team honors) and earned a spot on the A-10 All-Academic unit as well.
• Naaktgeboren is a three-time A-10 Player of the Week, including this week after she scored five goals in a 2-0 weekend, highlighted by a hat trick against Saint Louis. She was also honored Sept. 15 and Sept. 22.
• Her hat trick against Saint Louis was her third of the season, also including games against Towson (4 goals) and William & Mary.
• Also Wednesday, Naaktgeboren was an Honorable Mention for the NFHCA Player of the Week Award.
• Nationally, Naaktgeboren ranks sixth in both scoring and points.
• She also leads the A-10 with 5.00 shots and 3.40 shots-on-goal per game.
MULTI-PRONGED ATTACK
• Naaktgeboren isn't alone in her efforts, though, as a total of six Wildcat players were honored by the A-10 Wednesday.
• Joining Naaktgeboren on the First Team were senior midfielders Celie Constantine and Hannah Merritt and freshman forward Lourdes Wolf.
• Constantine ranks second in the A-10 with nine assists, while Merritt and Wolf each have four goals and two assists.
• Junior back Matilda Collins was named to the Second Team for the second straight year. She ranks second on the team with five goals.
• Freshman goalkeeper Avery Foster, who has played in all 18 games, joined Wolf on the All-Rookie Team.
ALMQUIST NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR
• In all, there are seven A-10 honorees for the Wildcats this season, as Davidson head coach Zoe Almquist was named A-10 Coach of the Year after leading the Wildcats on an upward swing.
• Almquist is the second Wildcat to earn the honor, following Ginny Turner's selection in 2015.
REMATCH WITH THE SPIDERS
• Davidson and Richmond played a double-overtime thriller on Oct. 10 in Davidson, with the Spiders prevailing 2-1 after more than 74 minutes of play.
• A goal by Reese Miller proved to be the difference and clinched a third straight overtime victory for the Spiders in the series.
• The Wildcats led 1-0 after Merritt scored on a first-quarter penalty corner inserted by Constantine and stick-stopped by Naaktgeboren.
• Early in the second quarter, Richmond's Clara Larripa scored, also on a corner, and evened the game.
• Davidson has dropped 11 straight to the Spiders, with its last win coming in 2015.
• Richmond (11-7 overall) finished the league season 5-1 and tied for first with VCU, but the Spiders earned the top seed by defeating VCU 2-1 (also in double overtime) in the season finale.
• Thursday's winner will face either No. 2 VCU or No. 3 Saint Joseph's in Saturday's final at noon, also at Richmond, the predetermined tournament host.
TEAM 50
• The 2025 campaign is the 50th in Davidson program history.
• The Wildcats have celebrated the milestone throughout the past year, including with multiple events on Team 50 Weekend Oct. 10-12.
