Box Score

BOONE, N.C. – Jason Wallace hit a three-run home run in the eighth that proved the difference in the Appalachian State Mountaineers' 10-8 win over the Davidson Wildcats in the opening game of the SoCon series Friday night at Smith Stadium.

Davidson (13-17, 4-11 SoCon) got a run in the third and fourth, before Appalachian State (20-7-1, 5-7-1 SoCon) reclaimed the lead with a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth. The teams traded leads and put up runs in bunches, including four from the Wildcats in the fifth and three from the Mountaineers in the home half, before Wallace's three-run homer in the eighth.

Junior submariner Mike Frongello (2-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in three innings of relief for sophomore right-hander Ryan Overcash.

Taylor Miller (4-0) earned the win in relief of Matt Andress, after allowing one run on three hits in 2 2/3 innings. Chris Patterson worked a hitless ninth for the Mountaineers to record his eighth save of the season.

Sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire (2-for-4) singled to lead off the game, and junior right fielder Sam Payne (1-for-3) walked to give Davidson a pair of runners, but Andress got two straight strikeouts and a ground out to get out of the early inning jam.

Davidson got a run across in the third and the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. With one out in the third, Andress plucked Gadaire, who moved to third as Payne followed with a double down the right field line. Junior first baseman Danny Weiss's (2-for-4, 2 RBI) sacrifice fly gave the 'Cats' their first run of the game, and Davidson got its second on a leadoff home run in the fourth from sophomore left fielder Calvin Sigelbaum (1-for-5, HR).

After managing just a lead-off single in the third, Appalachian took advantage of a pair of Davidson errors and a hit for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Tyler Zupcic reached on a catcher's interference and stole second after Overcash got a pair of fly outs. Jeremy Dowdy was hit by a pitch, and both runners took a base on a wild pitch and scored as David Towarnicky singled into right field to knot the score. Ryan Stetson reaching safely on Davidson's second error of the inning as Payne's miscue gave the Mountaineers a 3-2 lead.

Davidson returned the favor, scoring four runs on two hits and an error to reclaim the lead, 6-3. Payne started the scoring by turning a one-out, four-pitch walk into a run as Weiss reached safely on an error and moved to third as freshman third baseman Andrew Barna (2-for-5) singled. A double steal gave Davidson its second run of the inning, and junior designated hitter Will General (1-for-5, RBI) hit a two-out double to plate Barna. Senior catcher Tommy Piacenza walked and freshman shortstop Michael Zeblo (1-for-3) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and everybody took a base on a wild pitch for Davidson's fourth run.

The Mountaineers tied the game for a second time with three runs in the fifth, including a two-run home run from Wes Hobson, but Davidson retook the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth. Gadaire doubled to start the sixth inning to get into the Mountaineers bullpen, and Weiss' RBI-infield single and a double to Barna, who scored the 'Cats' second run on a two-out wild pitch, gave Davidson an 8-6 lead.

Frongello came on to start the sixth inning, and Appalachian cut the lead to one on a pair of hits and an RBI-groundout. He worked a hitless seventh before the three-run home run to Wallace in the eighth that proved the game winner.

Patterson retired three Wildcats in the top of the ninth to earn the save and preserve the 10-8 win in the first game of the series.

Davidson and Appalachian will return to action tomorrow at 3 p.m.
