Box Score

BOONE, N.C. – The Appalachian State Mountaineers added three runs in the eighth inning to turn a one-run lead into a 7-3 win to clinch the SoCon series over the Davidson Wildcats Saturday at Smith Stadium.

Davidson scored a run in both the first and second before Appalachian answered with a run in the second and two more in the third to take a 3-2 lead. The Wildcats got a run back in the fifth on an RBI-single by sophomore second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum (1-for-4, RBI) to tie the score before Appalachian got the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh. The Mountaineers added three more on two hits off the Wildcat bullpen in the eighth, and Chris Patterson earned his second straight save in as many days to deliver the series victory.

Sophomore left-hander Chris Lamb (1-5) was tagged with the loss, after allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings.

Appalachian State's Will Helms (2-0) picked up the win, working a hitless inning of relief for Mountaineers starter Tyler Jackson. Patterson earned his ninth save of the season by allowing just two hits over the final two shutout innings.

Davidson got a run in the first on back-to-back, one-out base hits from junior first baseman Danny Weiss (1-for-5) and freshman third baseman Andrew Barna (2-for-5, RBI), whose single to left scored junior left fielder Sam Payne (walk) (1-for-3). Barna was wiped from the base paths on a fielder's choice and Weiss was caught stealing home to end the inning with Davidson leading 1-0.

Wes Hobson (3-for-4, 2 RBI) got Appalachian's first hit on a two-out single in the first, but was stranded before the Wildcats added another run in the second. Junior designated hitter Will General reached safely on a fielding error by at short to start the inning and moved to third on freshman shortstop Michael Zeblo's (1-for-4) single to right in the next at-bat. The Wildcats tried to squeeze in a run, but freshman right fielder Coleman Barron (1-for-4) popped up trying to lay down a bunt, and General was cut down at home on a fielder's choice for the second out. Sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire kept the inning alive with a two-out walk, and Zeblo scored from third on a wild pitch to put Davidson ahead 2-0.

Appalachian got on the board with a run in the bottom half on a pair of two-out hits and an error. Ryan Stetson (3-for-4, 2 RBI) doubled down the left field line and scored on Gadaire's miscue on Jason Wallace's (3-for-3, 2 RBI) base hit to center. Lamb got Doug Jones to fly out for the final out to strand him.

The Mountaineers took a 3-2 lead on a one-out, two-run home run from Hobson in the bottom of the third and threatened to bust the game open with bases loaded and no outs in the fourth. But Lamb worked out of the jam by striking out Jones and getting a double-play ball from Hector Crespo, as Sigelbaum and Zeblo turned it cleanly, and Davidson got a run in the top of the fifth to tie the score, as Payne walked, stole second and took third on a passed ball before scoring on a two-out, RBI-single by Sigelbaum.

Lamb allowed just one hit over the next two innings before Wallace led off the seventh with a single up the middle to bring sophomore right-hander Brian Russell on in relief. After moving to second on a walk, Wallace was sacrificed to third and scored on a sacrifice fly into left by Tyler Zupcic to give Appalachian a 4-3 lead.

Trailing just a run, junior right-hander Andy Bass came on to start the eighth, but Hobson recorded his third hit of the game to start and Jerod Faggart walked to put a pair of runners on for Jeremy Dowdy, who sacrificed them over a base. After David Towarnicky was intentionally walked, Stetson drove in two on a single up the middle and bring out junior right-hander Matt Sliwiak. Both runners bumped up a base on a balk, and Towarnicky scored from third on a sacrifice fly to put the Mountaineers ahead 7-3.

Sophomore catcher Seth Freeman (1-for-4) singled to lead off the top of the ninth and moved to second on Payne's two-out base hit into left field, but Chris Patterson struck out Weiss and Barna struck to end the game.

Appalachian and Davidson will conclude the series with a 1 p.m. game tomorrow.
