Box Score

BOONE, N.C. – Nathan Hyatt struck out nine batters and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and Chris Patterson earned his third straight save in as many days to pitch the Appalachian State Mountaineers to a 7-5 win for the series sweep over the Davidson Wildcats Sunday at Smith Stadium.

With Appalachian (22-7-1, 7-7-1 SoCon) taking a 5-0 lead after four innings, Hyatt (W, 2-0) walked senior catcher Tommy Piacenza in the third but was otherwise flawless, until plunking sophomore second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum, who scored on a wild pitch and passed ball, and surrendering a solo home run to freshman shortstop Michael Zeblo (1-for-4, RBI) in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-2.

Davidson (13-19, 4-13 SoCon) would get another run in the sixth to get within two, but the Mountaineers added a pair of scores in the bottom of the frame as a pair of hit batsmen scored on a dropped relay tag by Zeblo at second for what would have been the third out. The Wildcats got two more runs in the eighth to get within two for a second time, but Patterson would retire three straight Wildcats in the top of the ninth for his third save of the series and 10th of the season.

Appalachian got its first run in the second, as Jerod Faggart drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a one-out single by David Towarnicky and scored as Ryan Stetson doubled down the left field line, and added three more in the third on three hits. Hector Crespo (3-for-4, 2 RBI) opened the inning with a bunt single and went to third as Web Hobson singled into center field a batter later. Faggart walked to load the bases, and after Jeremy Dowdy drove in a pair with a single to left, both stole a base to get into scoring position. Junior first baseman Danny Weiss (1-for-4, RBI) cut down Faggart at home on a fielder's choice, but the Mountaineers got the run back as Dowdy scored on a passed ball.

Jason Wallace doubled down the left field line to start the fourth and bring on junior right-hander Ian Horkley in relief of senior left-hander Thomas Middour (L, 1-2), who allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits in three innings. Horkley got Doug Jones to ground out before the Mountaineers added another run on Crespo's RBI-single to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

Hyatt hit Sigelbaum, who stole second and scored on a wild pitch and a passed ball after junior designated hitter Will General became the seventh punch out, to give Davidson its first run in the fifth. The 'Cats got their first hit, a solo home run from Zeblo, to make it 5-2. But Hyatt struck out Piacenza and freshman right fielder Coleman Barron to end the inning.

Horkley made quick work of the Mountaineers in the fifth, and the Wildcats added another run in the sixth to trail two. Junior left fielder Sam Payne (2-for-3, RBI) hit a one-out double into left center and scored as Weiss followed with a base hit into right center. Weiss moved to second on a ground out from freshman third baseman Andrew Barna (1-for-4, RBI) and took third on a passed ball, but was stranded as Sigelbaum grounded out to end the inning.

Trailing two and with two outs in the sixth, a couple hit batsmen and an error by Davidson turned into two runs for the Mountaineers. After Horkley got a ground out, he hit Stetson, and after striking out Wallace, hit Jones. Crespo's offering into right center was relayed in by Gadaire and Sigelbaum but Zeblo dropped the tag at second to allow both runners to score and push the Mountaineers' lead back to 7-3.

Junior left-hander Mac Hunter retired three hitters in the seventh, and Davidson got something going in the eighth, putting together three hits for two runs. Gadaire (1-for-4) doubled to start and scored as Payne followed with a base hit to the gap in left center. Mountaineer reliever Taylor Miller took over for Will Helms, who allowed a hit in the seventh, and struck out Weiss before Barna plated Payne with a double through the right side. Miller, though, sat down Sigelbaum and General to end the inning with Appalachian still ahead, 7-5.

Hunter and junior submariner Mike Frongello retired three batters in the eighth, but Patterson did the same to the Wildcats in the ninth to earn his third save of the series.

After playing 11 straight SoCon games, Davidson will step out of league play to travel to Duke Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Blue Devils were the Wildcats' last non-conference opponent, getting a 6-2 win March 23 to begin Davidson's 12-game losing streak.
