Box Score
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Trailing 8-1 through seven innings, the Davidson Wildcats scored 11 runs over the final two frames to capture the 12-9 win over the Furman Paladins in the opening game of the Southern Conference series Friday night at Latham Stadium.
Davidson (12-6, 3-1 SoCon) scored four runs in the eighth inning to cut Furman's (6-11, 1-3 SoCon) lead to 8-5, before scoring seven in the top of the ninth on six hits and three errors to take a 12-8 lead.
Furman managed just one run in the bottom of the ninth, as junior Andy Bass got consecutive strikeouts to open the inning before allowing a pair of base hits to first baseman Aaron Thompkins and third baseman Cameron Allmendinger for a score. Bass struck out Blaine Rosenburg for the final out to preserve the victory and strand a Paladin runner on base.
Sophomore second baseman James Cerbie homered in the opening inning for the Wildcats' only run through the first seven innings. Davidson got three more hits through seven innings of play, but stranded three runners on base as Furman jumped out to an 8-1 lead with a pair of runs in the first, second, fifth and sixth.
The Wildcats finally got to senior right-hander Ian Parry, who scattered seven hits for five runs and struck out seven against no walks through 7 1/3 innings, in the eighth. Pinch hitter Michael Goldberg and freshman short stop Michael Zeblo got back-to-back base hits off Parry to open the eighth, and junior right fielder Sam Payne was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cerbie's fielder's choice to second allowed Goldberg to score the first run of the inning, and sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire plated Zeblo with a base hit through the right side to chase Parry.
Into the Furman bullpen, the Wildcat hitters came to feast, and Davidson touched up left-handed reliever Daniel Stallsmith and right-handed reliever Nick Karow for seven runs on seven hits over the final 1 2/3 innings. Junior first baseman Danny Weiss singled to load the bases for freshman third baseman Andrew Barna, who plated another run with a walk. Karow took over for Stallsmith and earned the final two outs of the eighth, though Davidson added one more on an RBI-groundout from junior designated hitter Will General.
With sophomore Brian Russell, who allowed just one hit in 2 1/3 shutout innings of relief, on the mound, the Wildcats went to work. Sophomore Jake Berman, who entered as a defensive replacement in left field, led off the inning with an infield single to third, and Zeblo and Payne followed with singles to load the bases with no outs. Cerbie drew a walk to run in the first score, but Zeblo was erased at home on Gadaire's fielder's choice for the first out. Weiss hit an infield single to the hole at short stop to allow Payne to score and cut the Paladins' lead to one run, and Barna slapped a two-RBI single through the right side to score Gadaire and Cerbie and give Davidson the 9-8 lead.
General reached safely on a fielding error by short stop J.B. Jenkins to keep the bases juiced with one out, and senior catcher Tommy Piacenza made Furman pay with a two-RBI base hit to left. Berman reached on a fielder's choice, as General was cut down at home, and Payne popped up in his second at-bat of the inning for the final out, but the damage was done as Davidson took a 12-8 lead forcing the bottom of the ninth.
Bass took over and allowed just one run on two hits in the bottom of the ninth, and Davidson secured the comeback win in the opening game of the series.
Russell (2-0) earned his second win of the year, as Karow was tagged with the loss for Furman.
Weiss (3-for-5, RBI) and Zeblo (3-for-5) each tallied three hits to lead the Wildcats at the plate, while Barna (2-for-4, 3 RBI) drove in a game-high three runs, including the game-winner. Cerbie (1-for-4, 3 RBI) also drove in three scores, while Piacenza (1-for-5, 2 RBI) plated a pair.
Both teams finished with 14 hits, and Furman had six hitters with a pair.
Davidson and Furman will play the second game of the series tomorrow at 5 p.m. and play the final Sunday at 1 p.m.
