GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Dylan Cole hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Furman Paladins to a 6-5 comeback win over the Davidson Wildcats in the second game of the series Saturday evening at Latham Stadium.

Davidson (12-7, 3-2 SoCon) took an early lead with a four-run third before Furman (7-11, 2-3 SoCon) rallied with a five-spot in the fifth. The Wildcats got across a run in the eighth to tie it, but Cole drove a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall off just-entered right-handed reliever Matt Sliwiak for the game-winner.

The Wildcats had their own ninth-inning drama in yesterday's comeback 12-9 win, and thanks to Cole's heroics Saturday, the teams enter the series finale with a win apiece.

Davidson jumped out to an early lead with four runs on three hits in the third. Freshman left fielder Michael Goldberg led off with an infield single to second and stole second base, before moving to third on a groundout by junior right fielder Sam Payne. After sophomore second baseman James Cerbie was hit by a pitch, sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire plated Goldberg with a base hit through the right side, and junior first baseman Danny Weiss cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left center field, his fourth of the season.

Junior right-hander Ian Horkley allowed just one hit through the first four innings before Furman figured him out in the fifth for five runs on four hits. J.B. Jenkins started the scoring with a base hit to left field, and Cameron Allmendinger was hit by a pitch to put a pair of runners on; both scored on consecutive hits by Cole (double) and Rob Fondu (single). Freshman third baseman Andrew Barna cut down the lead runner on a fielder's choice from Will Owens, who took second on a wild pitch and scored, along with Cole, when Matt Bona doubled into right center to knot the score at four.

Sophomore left-hander Chris Lamb came out of the pen and got a fly out from Will Miller, but not before Bona advanced to third on a passed ball to get into position to score on the play. Lamb retired Reese Wade on strikes for the final out, but Furman had regained the 5-4 lead.

After the Wildcats stranded a pair of runners in the sixth, Lamb gave way to junior right-hander Mike Frongello, and the pair combined to hold the Paladins to two hits through 3 2/3 shutout innings, as Davidson took advantage of a lead off walk to Weiss for the tying run in the eighth. Weiss was successfully sacrificed a base by Barna, before being wiped from the base paths on a fielder's choice by junior designated hitter Matt Ray. Ray stole second to get into scoring position for freshman short stop Michael Zeblo, who sent him in with a base hit into center field to tie the score at five.

Frongello gave up a lead off single to Wade in the bottom of the inning but got two ground outs and a fly out to strand him.

The top of the order for Davidson went down one-two-three in the top of the ninth, before Sliwiak gave up the walk-off home run to Cole.

Bobby Lyne became the winner for Furman, working the final 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief. Cole (2-for-3, 2 RBI) was the hero for the Paladins, who also were helped by a pair of RBI from Bona (1-for-4).

Both teams finished with seven hits, with Davidson led by Zeblo (2-for-4, RBI) and Weiss (1-for-3, 3 RBI).

Davidson and Furman will play the rubber match tomorrow at 1 p.m.
