Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats used four home runs, including a pair by freshman third baseman Andrew Barna, to win a second straight Southern Conference series with a 15-7 victory over the Furman Paladins in the finale Sunday at Latham Stadium.

The top of the lineup did most of the damage for Davidson (13-7, 4-2 SoCon) against Furman (7-12, 2-4 SoCon), as junior right fielder Sam Payne (2-for-5, HR, 4 RBI), sophomore second baseman James Cerbie (2-for-5), sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire (2-for-4, 2 RBI), junior first baseman Danny Weiss (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Barna (4-for-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI) combined for 12 of the Wildcats' 17 hits and all 14 RBI.

Barna's first home run of the day was a three-run blast to left center in the third that extended Davidson's lead to 5-1. The Wildcats picked up a pair of runs in the opening frame as Gadaire (double) and then Barna (single) drove in scores, and Furman got across a run in the second on a leadoff single to Aaron Thompkins, who stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by J.B. Jenkins.

Payne hit Davidson's second three-run homer, in the fourth off left-handed reliever Barry Benton and following back-to-back, one-out base hits from Berman and Freeman to push the 'Cats' lead to 8-1.

Furman added a run in the fourth as Reese Wade (single) scored on Jenkins' sacrifice fly, but Barna got it back with his second home run of the game to lead off the fifth.

Right-hander Jay Friedman took over for Benton to start the sixth and struck out Freeman and Payne for a pair of quick outs before Cerbie (double), Gadaire (triple, RBI), Weiss (double, RBI) and Barna (single, RBI) put together four straight two-out hits for three runs to open up a 12-2 lead.

Sophomore right-hander Ryan Overcash had allowed just a pair of runs on five hits through the first five innings before Furman put together four hits for a four-spot in the sixth. Wade opened the inning with a triple down the right field line and scored in the next play on a Thompkins groundout. Jenkins (ground-rule double) and Cameron Allmendinger (single) followed with two straight hits to bring sophomore right-hander Brian Russell out of the bullpen for Davidson. Russell sat last night's hero Dylan Cole down on strikes for the second out of the inning, but Will Owens tripled down the right field line to clear the bases.

The Wildcats answered in the seventh as Berman, Freeman and Payne put together three straight base hits for a run, and Freeman scored a second on a double-steal attempt as Payne was caught stealing second.

Weiss' one-out solo home run in the eighth was the Wildcats' final round-tripper and run of the day, and Furman added one more in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-groundout by Will Muzika for the final 15-7 margin.

Overcash (4-0) kept his perfect record intact, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and striking out a pair in 5 1/3 to pick up the win.

Right-hander Kevin Gaid (1-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) in 3 1/3 innings. Owens led the Paladins at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Davidson will return to Wilson Field Tuesday, hosting the Duke Blue Devils (12-7, 2-4 ACC) at 7 p.m.
