Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats added to an early lead with 12 runs over the final four innings to take the final game of the series against the Wofford Terriers, 16-8, Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field.

Holding a tentative 4-3 lead, the Wildcats exploded for 10 runs over the sixth and seventh innings to take control of the game and never trailed the rest of the way.

Davidson finished with 19 hits, led by sophomore first baseman Danny Weiss, who went 4-for-6 with five RBI and scored three runs. Senior right fielder Chase FitzPatrick and freshman catcher Seth Freeman each had three hits for the 'Cats, who improve to 9-9 overall and 4-3 in the Southern Conference.

Senior Matt Webb (1-0) entered in relief of starter Chris Kennedy, stifling the Wofford offense long enough for the Wildcats to get going. Webb held the Terriers to just three hits for one unearned run in 4 2/3 innings, with four strikeouts to no walks, to pick up his first win of the season.

For Wofford (10-9, 3-3), Cash Collins (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits in just three innings.

Short stop Zach Kayne led off the game with a single into center field and, after being sacrificed to second by center fielder Brett Shore, scored on Weiss' first hit of the game.

The Terriers momentarily snagged the lead with a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning, but Davidson answered with two runs in the top of the second and never trailed the rest of the way.

Second baseman James Cerbie and Freeman led off the second frame with back-to-back base hits. Cerbie scored as third baseman Chris FitzPatrick reached safely on an error by Collins. Freeman scored on Kayne's sacrifice fly in the next at-bat to put Davidson ahead, 3-2.

For the third straight time, the Wildcats lead off with a hit, this time a double from Weiss, who bumped to third on a sacrifice bunt from Drew Gadaire and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cerbie in the third.

Wofford got a run back in the fourth on a solo home run by Diamaduros to cut the lead to one, but the Wildcats exploded for six runs on seven hits in the sixth and added four more on three hits in the seventh to take control of the game.

In the decisive sixth, Sam Payne jump started the action with a one-out single up the middle, and Chase FitzPatrick, designated hitter Pat Brady (RBI-single), Weiss (RBI-double) and Cerbie (two-RBI double) converted five straight hits into four runs. With the bases loaded, Chris FitzPatrick tallied the final hit of the inning, a two-out single that scored the final two runs to give the 'Cats a 10-3 lead.

The Wildcats kept right on rolling into the seventh, adding a run on Payne's lead-off double and Chase FitzPatrick's follow-up single up the middle. Brady drew a walk, setting the table for Weiss' home run down the left field line, as the 'Cats built a 13-3 lead.

Wofford tried to chip away with four runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI single by Jake Williams and a two-run home run by Kyle Behrendt, but Davidson's lead proved too great.

The Wildcats would add two more runs in the eighth on Chase FitzPatrick's two-run home run. Brady, who took the free pass, also scored on the play.

The Terriers manufactured one more run in the bottom of the eighth on a pair of hits to arrive at the final 16-8 margin.

Davidson will host Wake Forest Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Wilson Field and travel to Gardner-Webb the following night for a 6 p.m. start. Davidson will return to conference play this weekend, hosting Appalachian State for three games: 7 p.m., Friday; 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
