Box Score
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Despite falling behind early, the Davidson field hockey team kept fighting and held top-ranked Wake Forest scoreless in the second half of their 4-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon at Belk Turf Field, with senior Tyler Kirkland scoring her second goal in as many games for the Wildcats.
Finding themselves down 4-0 at halftime, Davidson (2-6, 0-1 NorPac) held the Deacons to seven shots in the second half, not allowing Wake Forest light up the scoreboard in the final 35 minutes.
Wake Forest (8-0, 1-0 ACC) struck twice in the first six minutes of play, to take an early 2-0 lead. Then in the 24th minute, Faith Adams put the Deacons up by three when her shot off a set penalty corner play snuck past Davidson goalkeeper Christa Goeke and into the goal. WFU rounded out their scoring courtesy of Aileen Davis' second goal of the day, a deflection that she lifted over a diving Goeke in front of the goal.
Davidson found the back of the goal at the 60-minute mark when Kirkland gathered the ball in front of the goal that was bouncing around following a shot by teammate Clare Perry. Kirkland then put her shot around the Wake Forest defenders and into the net to make the score 4-1. It was Kirkland's team-leading third goal of the year, and made her three-for-three on her scoring chances, having only taken the minimum three shots for her scoring strikes so far. Kirkland also leads the squad with eight total points on the season.
Perry led the 'Cats with two shots in the game, one of which was on goal. Britti Himelfarb, Lisa Landoe and Gray Robinson all contributed scoring attempts for Davidson. Goeke recorded three saves in 70 minutes of action in goal.
The Wildcats will continue their four-game homestand when they host Catawba on Friday, Oct. 26 at Belk Turf Field, scheduled for 7 p.m.
