DAVIDSON, N.C. - Behind freshman Gray Robinson's first career multi-goal game and a trio of scores in the second half, the Davidson field hockey team blanked Catawba College 5-0 at a rainy Belk Turf Field Friday evening.
Robinson led the way offensively with her first two goals as a Wildcat, recording the inaugural scoring strike in the 25th minute of play when she took a pass from teammate Clare Perry on the right side of the goal, and fired a shot to the near corner and into the back of the net to put the 'Cats up 2-0, a lead they would hold into halftime. She then rounded out the scoring for Davidson with her second goal at the 42:09 mark of the second half, gathering up a deflected shot and again taking aim from the right side of the circle and finding pay dirt for the team's fifth goal of the game.
Davidson (3-6) opened up the scoring just seven minutes into the game, courtesy of senior Lauren Calve's first goal of the season, a lift shot from the middle of the circle that went over a diving Catawba (2-7) goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Junior Liz Luckey was credited with the assist after providing the crossing pass from outside of the circle to Calve for the shot.
Finding themselves with a 2-0 lead at halftime, the 'Cats continued to dominate the play offensively, consistently establishing attacks and creating chances on goal throughout the first part of the second frame. Davidson found pay dirt a little over a minute into the half when sophomore Courtney Tobe connected on her first goal of the season, taking a shot from the top of the circle that made its way through a group of defenders gathered in front of the goal and put Davidson up by three. Freshman Hannah English recorded her first career point with the assist.
Making the most out of her fourth appearance on the year, sophomore Ellie Szykowny gave the Wildcats a 4-0 advantage when she scored on her first shot this season, a picture-perfect drive through the circle to the right side of the goal, the setting up and taking aim to the near side.
Tobe and freshman Kathelijn van der Ven both recorded a pair of shots for the Wildcats, with Robinson also needing only two for her pair of scores. Calve, Perry, Szykowny and freshman Christine Rua all contributed to Davidson's 12 total shots in the game, good for a seven-shot advantage over Catawba, including a 6-1 lead in the first half.
Two Wildcat goalkeepers combined for the shutout, with senior Brittany Rollek starting and playing the first half, making a save on the only shot she faced. Junior Mary Clay made her first appearance of the year between the pipes, and had a pair of very impressive stops of her own.
With the win, Davidson moves back over .500 at home, now sporting 3-2 mark at Belk Turf Field on the year. They will look to garner their second weekend home sweep of the year when they face off against Monmouth at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
