BOONE, N.C. - After 70 minutes of play and two overtimes, Wednesday night's contest between Davidson and Appalachian State was still without a victor. So the two teams took their 2-2 tie into penalty strokes, with Appalachian coming out with a 3-2 win over the Wildcats at Kidd-Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C.
Davidson was unable to convert their first two attempts in the penalty stroke round, with sophomore Clare Perry giving the 'Cats their first score in the third round. However, the final two Wildcat shooters also came up empty, opening the door for the Mountaineers, who were able to put away their first three attempts to come away with the victory.
Davidson (3-8) struck first in regulation, when senior Britti Himelfarb found the back of the net for her second goal of the year, off an assist from teammate Kathelijn van der Ven in the 11th minute of play to put the 'Cats up, 1-0. Van der Ven recorded her third assist of the season, which is tied for the team lead with Himelfarb.
After ASU (2-8) scored a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead, it was freshman Hannah English who pulled Davidson back even with her first career goal, a breakaway scoring strike at the 51:47 mark of the second half.
The two teams battled it out for the rest of regulation, and went into overtime with the score knotted at two. The first 15-minute extra period was full of offensive opportunities by both teams, with Davidson holding a 4-3 lead in shots. Senior goalkeeper Brittany Rollek stepped up to the challenge, making a pair of saves in the first OT, and ending the night with six stops overall.
Neither team was able to register a shot in the second overtime, sending the game into the tie-breaking penalty stroke period.
English led all players with five shots in the contest, four which were on goal. Van der Ven and Perry each fired off three attempts, with nine different Wildcats recording a shot. As a team, Davidson out-shot Appalachian State by a 19-13 count, and recorded eight penalty corners to ASU's seven.
Wednesday's contest was just the fourth time in program history that Davidson had a game go into penalty strokes, and was the first since the 2003 season, when they fell to the University of the Pacific by a 2-1 score.
The 'Cats will continue their season-high five-game road trip this weekend when they travel to Radford, Va. to face off against Radford University on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
