
Wildcats Reach SoCon W. Tennis Finals, Defeat CofC 4-2

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.) helped advance the Davidson women's tennis team to the Southern Conference tournament title game for the third time in the past four years with a three-set win at No. 5 singles to seal the Wildcats' 4-2 win over No. 2-seeded College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals in Charleston, S.C.
Davidson improved to 19-5, the most single-season wins since it score a 20-6 record in 2005. College of Charleston ended its season at 23-4. The Wildcats will now face No. 1-seeded Furman for the third time in the past four years in the championship game on Sunday.
Davidson opened the semifinal match with a 1-0 lead thanks to the play of the No. 3 doubles team of senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) and freshman Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany), who earned an 8-5 triumph over Chelesa Albertz and Lee Evans. The Wildcats also took home the No. 2 doubles match by the count of 8-6.
CofC came back though, grabbing a 2-1 lead in team points when it captured singles wins at No. 2 and 3 in straight sets.
Senior All-SoCon first-team member Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio) knotted things up when she earned her second tournament win with a 6-1, 7-6 decision over Albertz at No. 1 singles. Linville had also defeated Albertz during the regular season as the Wildcats' No. 1 player improved her record 14-8.
Fellow tri-captain Whelan then gave the Wildcats the lead for good, 3-2, when she defeated Holly Dowse at No. 4 by the count of 6-4, 6-4. It was the seniors eighth win at the No. 4 singles spot and her team-leading 17th overall on the year.
Capping the match off was senior Skeeters with a three-set thriller over Anna Lee Evans at No. 5. The Sportsmanship Award winner as voted on by the league coaches, took the first set 7-6, before falling 6-3 in the second set. She then came back with a 6-4 victory to improve to 15-3 on the year and 6-2 at No. 5 singles for the Wildcat win.
Davidson, in search of its first SoCon title, plays No. 1-seeded Furman on Sunday, Apr. 20 at 1:30 p.m. The Paladins defeated Elon 4-0 and have won nine of the last 10 tournament titles.
