DAVIDSON — Davidson built a nine-run lead then held off a late Dayton charge for a series-evening 9-7 win Saturday at Wilson Field.
The Wildcats (11-13) and Flyers, now both 3-5 in Atlantic 10 play, will settle their three-game set on Sunday.
Forrest Lietz and Anthony Torreso hit their team-leading third homers of the season in the first and second innings, respectively, to get things started. Lietz's shot to right made it 2-0, and Torreso's three-run no-doubter to left highlighted a five-run second.
Matthew Vannoy and Aidan Rice added RBI-singles in the third and fourth, respectively, to make it 9-0.
Meanwhile, starter Cooper Cavanaugh kept the Flyers at bay in a five-inning winning effort. He allowed just two hits and walked three, while striking out five.
The Flyers (15-11) rallied, however, and scored seven runs in the final three innings with the aid of two Wildcat errors. A three-run homer by Jason Bello in the ninth cut it to two, and Dayton got the tying run to the plate before a flyout ended the threat.
