Wildcats Return to Wilson Friday to Host Bryant

After four games on the road, the Davidson baseball team returns home Friday to open a three-game series against Bryant at Wilson Field.
Friday's 3 p.m. game will start the Wildcats' third home series of the season and the first in a stretch of four straight weekends at Wilson Field (also Marist, Tennessee Tech and Fordham).
The Wildcats are 6-6 following a 10-7 win at High Point Tuesday night.
Freshman first baseman Michael O'Shaughnessy leads the way with a .483 average (14-for-29) and a 1.480 OPS to go with four home runs (tied for the team lead) and 12 RBIs. Junior first baseman/outfielder Ryan Wilson is hitting .395 with four home runs and team-highs of four doubles, 15 RBIs and four stolen bases. And sophomore second baseman Jack Cotrone is hitting .361 with four homers and 13 RBIs.
Pitchers Will Schomberg, Ryan Feczko and Jacob Peaden are slated to start against Bryant. Schomberg has been the standard-setter so far with a 3.14 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 14.1 innings.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Bryant enters with a 2-7 record, but with wins over Virginia Tech and Liberty.
The Bulldogs are led by outfielder Derek Smith (.333, 11-for-33) and infielder Jake Gustin (.314, 6 RBIs), while catcher Jackson Phinney (2 HRs) is the only Bulldog with multiple round-trippers. Chase Jeter (LHP), Coleman Picard (RHP) and Ken Turner (RHP) are expected to start this weekend.
The Wildcats lead the all-time series 5-0, including three wins last February in Davidson when the Bulldogs were the No. 22 team in the country.
COACHING TIES
Davidson coach Rucker Taylor and Bryant coach Ryan Klosterman were college teammates at Vanderbilt.
In fact, the two comprised the opening day middle infield — Taylor at second, Klosterman at short — back in 2003, which was notable for two reasons: it was Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin's first game, and the Commodores were facing an Old Dominion pitcher by the name of Justin Verlander.
Taylor (double) and Klosterman (triple) each had hits against the future big-leaguer that day.
WELCOME BACK HOZ
The weekend series will also be a homecoming of sorts for 2022 Davidson graduate and infielder John Hosmer, who is playing a fifth year at Bryant.
Primarily a third baseman for the Wildcats, Hosmer started 102 games the last two seasons, hitting 18 home runs and driving in 77 runs during that time. He had a team-best 35 RBIs in 2021.
Hosmer is the first of three former Wildcats Davidson will face this year, also including 2022 graduates and outfielders Trevor Candelaria and Parker Nolan. They play for N.C. State, Davidson's April 18 opponent.
