Wildcats Open Series With Win Over UMass
5/6/2022 5:02:00 PM | Baseball
DAVIDSON — An early lead, and some weather-delay patience, paid off for the Davidson Wildcats Friday afternoon in a 5-3 series-opening win over UMass at Wilson Field.
The Wildcats' fourth straight victory is their 35th of the year, which matches the program's single-season wins total set during the 2017 run to the NCAA Super Regionals. Davidson is 35-9 overall and 13-3 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, while UMass fell to 7-9 in league play.
Friday's game included an hour-and-25-minute lightning delay between the fifth and sixth innings.
John Hosmer led the offense Friday, going 3-for-4 and finishing a single shy of the cycle. He hit his fifth home run of the season to make it 3-0 in the second inning, doubled down the left field line in the third and hit his first career triple off the wall in center in the seventh.
Jacob Hinderleider got the Wildcats started with a two-RBI single in the first, and Michael Carico followed Hosmer's solo blast with his own in the second. The shot to right field was Carico's 16th of the season, which ranks third on the single-season program list, two off the record.
Three hits in the fourth produced another Davidson run when Ryan Wilson reached on a fielder's choice, and the Wildcats had a 5-0 lead.
Starter Nolan DeVos struck out eight and allowed three hits in four innings before handing the the ball to the bullpen. Bennett Flynn closed it out with a scoreless ninth and recorded his fourth save.
Carico, Trevor Candelaria and Parker Nolan had two hits apiece.
