Wildcats Surge Late in Win Over Billikens

ST. LOUIS — Pitcher Blake Hely kept Billiken bats in check, and the Davidson bats produced late in a 9-2 Wildcat win at Saint Louis Saturday night.
It's a win that ensures Davidson will exit the weekend as the sole Atlantic 10 Conference front-runner, though the Wildcats have a chance to directly help themselves get more separation in Sunday's series finale. The Wildcats (32-9 overall, 11-3 A-10) are two games ahead of the second-place pack of the Billikens (22-18, 9-5), VCU and Saint Joseph's.
Though the final score indicates otherwise, Saturday's game was tight until the Wildcats broke it open with a six-run ninth inning. With Davidson ahead 3-2, Ryan Wilson fought off an 0-2 count to drive in two runs with a bases-loaded single. Jacob Hinderleider then singled to drive in two more runs, and John Hosmer's double brought in two more Wildcats, making it 9-2.
The Wildcats struck with a run in the first inning after Trevor Candelaria was hit by a pitch and scored when Henry Koehler reached on an error.
After the Billikens evened the score, Parker Nolan put the Wildcats back in front with a two-run home run in the fifth. It's his 10th homer of the year, as he joins Michael Carico as Wildcats with double-digit round-trippers.
Meanwhile, the right-handed Hely battled on the mound and improved to 7-0. He struck out 10 in 6.2 innings of work, while surrendering five hits and one earned run.
Gabe Levy came on in a pressure spot in the seventh inning — with the tying run on third — and forced an inning-ending groundout. In all, he recorded the final seven outs, two by strikeout, and didn't allow a hit to secure his A-10 leading eighth save.
Six Wildcats — Candelaria, Nolan, Wilson, Hinderleider, Hosmer and Jake Wilhoit — finished the day with two hits each.
