Field Hockey Ends Season with 2-1 Loss at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond scored twice in less than three minutes of the third period to defeat Davidson 2-1 in the final scheduled Atlantic 10 field hockey game of the season Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Wildcats close the season 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the A-10.
"The end this year really hurts — it's the kind of pain that comes when you are so close to our goals we can taste it," said coach Zoe Almquist. "But, for our team, the gift of playing this sport, being all together in a tumultuous year is something I don't think any of us would have traded for the world. The chase is worth the pain. I don't think there was a dry eye in our post game huddle today — and that's how I know this group was so special. I want to say thank you to our seniors, too, for showing us how to fight to the last minute and for guiding us through our collective growth over the past 12 months. I'm so excited for their next chapter in life — and know that they will carry Davidson field hockey with them wherever they go."
Corynne Hammit provided the Wildcats' goal at the 56:47 mark, by following up an Amy Worscheh shot. It was Hammit's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The teams played to a scoreless half, but the Spiders struck twice off of penalty corners. Steffie Bongers scored at the 34:20 mark, then again with the clock at 37:13.
Richmond finished the day with a 14-4 advantage in shots, including 8-3 in shots on goal, as Caitlyn Gund and Nellie Turnage joined Hammit in providing the Wildcats' best scoring threats. The Spiders also had five corners, compared to two for Davidson.
