ROCK HILL, S.C. — Ruben Fontes hit his 10th home run of the season to help Davidson build a three-run lead Tuesday night at Winthrop, but the Wildcats were held scoreless from there in a 9-3 loss to the host Eagles.
The loss is the sixth straight for the Wildcats, who are now 14-13. Winthrop improved to 18-14 with its second win over Davidson this season.
Matt Frey's RBI-single in the second inning gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead and also marked the 22nd straight game the junior second baseman has reached base. A sacrifice fly by Alex Mardiney in the third inning made it 2-0 before Fontes, the Atlantic 10 home runs leader, hit a solo shot to right to lead off the fourth.
Winthrop scored its first run in the bottom of the inning, then took a 4-3 lead in the fifth, which included a two-run home run by Hunter Lipscomb. The Eagles added three runs in the seventh on four hits and an error and two more in the eighth on a hit and an error.
Freshman right-hander Gabe Levy started on the mound and threw three shutout innings, striking out four and allowing two hits.
Alex Fenton, Sam Reinertsen, Luke Burton, Casey Kruger, Austin Leonard and Kieran Casey pitched in relief.
