PHILADELPHIA – Davidson baseball picked up its first extra-innings victory of the year Saturday, downing league foe La Salle 6-4 in ten innings at Hank DeVincent Field in Philadelphia.
Senior Brian Fortier played the hero, going 2-for-5 with a triple and homerun, plating two runs. The long ball was his ninth of the season, and his triple and subsequent run in the tenth proved to be the difference maker. Classmate Will Robertson and sophomores Eric Jones and Justin Lebek also collected two hits, with Jones also scoring twice.
The 'Cats broke the blank in the third, when Robertson singled to right. He came home on the next at bat thanks to an Alec Acosta double to deep center. Davidson quickly gained some insurance, as Fortier launched his bomb over the right center wall to put them up 3-0.
The Explorers responded in the bottom of the inning, using a sequence of singles to bring a run across and cut the lead to 3-1. They tied the game the following frame, taking advantage of a two-out error to score twice.
La Salle stole the lead in the fifth, as hitting leader Ben Faso sliced a triple and then scored on a groundout.
The 'Cats tied it up in the sixth, after senior Tyler Agard pinch hit and found his way to first via a fielding error, allowing Jones, who singled earlier, to cross.
The game remained a stalemate until the tenth, when, with one out, Fortier again found the perfect right center location, pushing out a triple. He then scored the go-ahead, taking advantage of an Explorers' passed ball to put Davidson up 5-4 and ultimately take the contest. The 'Cats added an insurance run in the inning, when Jones, who had boarded via walk, advanced to third on a Justin Lebek single and then scored on a balk.
Davidson will look to complete the sweep Sunday, with first pitch slated at 11:00 a.m.
