MERION STATION, Pa. – Andrew Pope's three-RBI homerun in the eighth helped lead the Davidson baseball team to an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over Saint Joseph's Saturday at Smithson Field.
The win improved Davidson to 16-11 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Hawks dropped to 11-12 on the season and 2-3 in the A-10.
With the game tied at four, the Wildcats took their first lead of the day off an RBI single from Andrew Born that scored Sam Foy, who also singled, before Pope's three-run homerun that secured the contest.
Davidson out hit the Hawks, 13-11, thanks to Pope and Lee Miller who both picked up three-hit performances. Pope went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored, while Lee Miller went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Two other Wildcats recorded multiple-hit performances.
Durin O'Linger (3-2) was the first of three Wildcats to appear on the mound, allowing four runs – one earned – off six hits with four strikeouts. Westin Whitmire pitched the final inning and recorded his fifth save of the season.
Brian Lau (0-1) was the third Hawk to appear on the mound, allowing four runs off three hits with one strikeout for his first loss of the season. Lucas Rollins pitched the first six innings, allowing four runs off nine hits with a game-high nine strikeouts.
Saint Joseph's got out to an early 3-0 lead in its first at bat thanks to Charlie Concannon's first of two homeruns – a three-RBI homer to right field, but the Wildcats cut the Hawk lead to one in the fourth off three singles.
After a solo homerun from Deon Stafford in the fifth to make it a 4-2 ballgame, Davidson rallied for two runs off three hits – all singles to tie the score at four in the sixth.
SJU rallied off a Concannon homer in the eighth, before scoring two off three hits in its final at bat but Whitmire retired the final two batters to secure the victory.
The two teams will return to Smithson Field tomorrow, April 3 for the series finale at 1 p.m.
