MERION STATION, Pa. – Clark Beeker recorded his first-career shutout to lead the Davidson baseball team to a 3-0 victory over Saint Joseph's Friday at Smithson Field.
Beeker (6-0) pitched all nine innings for his second-career complete game, limiting Saint Joseph's (11-11, 2-2 A-10) to just six hits with seven strikeouts for his sixth win of the season. Beeker threw 128 pitches and only walked one batter.
The win improved the Wildcats to 15-11 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Davidson out hit the Hawks, 9-6, as two Wildcats picked up multiple-hit performances. Jake Sidwell went 2-for-3, while Tyler Agard went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored to lead both teams.
After two silent innings, Davidson got on board off two singles in the third. Agard singled to the left side before Andrew Born sent one to right field, which led to a fielding error that allowed Agard to score.
The 'Cats continued with the 1-0 lead until the seventh inning when two insurance runs crossed. Lead off singles from Lee Miller and Brian Fortier retired Hawks starter Tim Ponto, before a sacrifice bunt from Sidwell moved the Wildcats into scoring position.
Alec Acosta then sacrifice flied to score Miller before Agard singled up the middle that brought in Fortier to secure the ballgame.
Ponto (1-2) was the first of three Hawks to appear on the mound for Saint Joseph's and pitched an impressive 6.0 innings, allowing three runs off six hits with eight strikeouts.
The two teams will return to Smithson Field tomorrow, April 2 for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
