'Cats Split Doubleheader; Win Series vs. UMass

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson baseball team closed out its opening Atlantic 10 weekend splitting a doubleheader with the Massachusetts Minutemen Saturday at Wilson Field.
Game 1 Recap – Davidson 5, Massachusetts 4
Highlights
The Davidson baseball team recorded its seventh-straight win with a 5-4 walk-off victory over Massachusetts in the 11th inning in game one of the doubleheader Saturday at Wilson Field.
After trading runs in the second and sixth innings, the two teams found themselves in a pitching dual until the 11th.
After Brian Fortier led off with a single and Alec Acosta reached via an error, freshmen pinch hitters Ward Coleman and Eric Jones recorded back-to-back singles that tied the score at four. Tyler Agard then singled to left center that brought in Coleman to secure the ballgame.
Josh Smutzer (2-1) recorded the win for the Wildcats, pitching 0.2 innings in relief. Durin O'Linger pitched the first 7.2 innings, putting in an impressive performance allowing just two runs off four hits with five strikeouts.
Evan Roberts also pitched in relief for Davidson, allowing two runs – one earned – off four hits with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
Evan Mackintosh (0-1) was the second Minuteman to appear on the mound, allowing three runs – one earned – off six hits with two strikeouts for the loss. Justin Lasko started the first 6.2 innings, allowing two runs off seven hits with four strikeouts.
Davidson out hit UMass, 14-8, but committed three errors compared to the Minutemen's one. Andrew Born led both teams going 3-for-5 with one run, while four other Wildcats recorded multiple-hit outings.
Game 2 Recap – Massachusetts 7, Davidson 1
Highlights
Two homeruns from John Jennings helped lift Massachusetts to a 7-1 victory over the Davidson baseball team that closed out the weekend series Saturday night at Wilson Field.
The Minutemen (4-10, 1-2 A-10) got out to a 3-0 start with a solo homerun from Jennings in the second, before another in the fourth that sparked another run for the early lead.
After three silent innings, Davidson (14-10, 2-1 A-10) tried to rally in the eighth but could only score once off a sacrifice fly from Jake Sidwell.
Four more runs crossed in the ninth for UMass of three hits and two Wildcat errors, which secured the contest.
The Minutemen out hit Davidson, 12-6, as Jennings led both teams, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two run scored. Eric Jones (2-for-3) and Andrew Born (2-for-2) led the Wildcats with multiple hit performances.
Tim Cassidy (1-2) recorded the win for UMass, pitching the first eight innings and allowing one run off five hits with three strikeouts. Kevin Hassett closed out the victory allowing one hit and a walk in the final inning.
Four Wildcats appeared on the mound for Davidson, including Casey Sutherland (1-2) who pitched the first 4.1 innings and allowed three runs off six hits for the loss.
