Wildcats Run By Dayton, 9-4, In Series Opener

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson baseball team ran by the Dayton Flyers, 9-4, in the series opener Friday night at Wilson Field. The win improves the Wildcats to 16-15 overall and 6-7 in the A-10, while the Flyers fell to 11-25 on the season and 2-11 in the league.
Despite being outhit, 14-10, the Wildcats scored multiple runs in three innings to secure the win. Dayton ended the day with two errors and nine Flyers left on base. Left fielder Lee Miller led both teams with one run, two hits and four RBI in four at bats, including a three-run homerun in the third. Three other Wildcats picked up two hits for Davidson, including third baseman Ben Arkin with two doubles.
After the two teams traded runs in their first at bats, the 'Cats took the 4-1 lead when Miller got the ball rolling for Davidson. The Wildcats ended the inning with three runs scored off two hits.
Two runs were traded in the fifth inning, before Davidson scored three-straight runs – one in the sixth and two in the seventh to secure the contest.
On the mound, RHP Clark Beeker started the day, allowing four runs off 13 hits with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched to improve to 4-2 on the season. After RHP Josh Smutzer threw the next 1.1 innings, LHP Evan Roberts recorded his first save of his career as the freshman faced the final four batters.
Four Flyers appeared on the mound for Dayton, including RHP Charlie Dant who allowed six runs off seven hits and threw two strikeouts for the loss.
The two teams will return to Wilson Field tomorrow, April 18 to conclude the weekend series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The Davidson baseball program will honor its eight seniors prior to first pitch for a special Senior Day ceremony.
