DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Paige Farrar recorded her first three career points and Davidson broke up a halftime tie by scoring two quick goals to open the second half on its way to a 9-7 win over George Mason Friday evening in Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse in Richardson Stadium.
Tied at 4-all to start the new half, the 'Cats got a goal 13 seconds in by Adren Simone, and then Rademacher scored a minute and 45 seconds later for a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish.
Davidson halted a five-game skid to improve to 4-7 on the season and picked up its first A-10 win in three games.
"Today was about playing together on both ends," said head coach Kim Wayne. "We have worked hard the past few days at being aggressive and having multiple threats, so it was nice to see us put their hard work into action. I'm most proud of the fact that we didn't give up after last weekend's loss to Richmond."
Farrar scored her first three career points all in a row, with an assist and back-to-back goals in the first half. Rademacher finished with two goals, while Simone led five Wildcats with one goal each. Emma Sissman had two assists.
George Mason's Jacquelyn Spalding scored three times, while Alexa McGovern had two goals. Two other Patriots scored single goals each, while Mackenzie Jones and Kirstin Morgan had one assist apiece.
The Patriots (7-5, 2-2 A-10) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first seven minutes, but the Wildcats answered with four straight goals to take a 4-2 lead. Farrar had all three of her points during the run, including the two goals. Lucy Sexton added her 20th goal to start the rally and Annie Brockett scored the other goal, her 18th of the season.
The half would end with Mason adding two more goals at the 7:10 and 6:41 marks for a 4-all tie.
After the break, Davidson struck quickly thanks to Simone, who grabbed the draw control, ran down to Mason's zone and fired a shot to the left post that found the back of the net just 13 seconds into the start of the half.
McGovern for the Patriots would make it 6-5 with 26:21 on the clock after Rademacher's score earlier, but Nicole Pettiglio answered back for the 'Cats with her 14th score less than a minute later.
A little over a minute after that, George Mason got back to within one, 7-6, with Spalding's second goal of the game and 24:39 left.
Davidson put the game away later, getting a great pass from Sissman to a cutting Emily Cooke in the arc to make it 8-6 with 12:50 left, and Rademacher struck again at the 9:38 mark on a free-position shot for a 9-6 advantage. Mason added one more goal late for the final scoring.
"Today's win gives us the confidence we need going into Sunday's game against UMass and the rest of the season," said Wayne.
The Wildcats held slight advantages in shots (20-17), groundballs (18-15), and draw controls (10-8).
Defensively, Pettiglio (3), Veronica Fiorino (2) and Morgan Burch (2) led the 'Cats to a season-high 11 caused turnovers. Simone tied her career-high with five draw controls and Sissman added four.
Goalie Katy Boyle was solid between the pipes, stopping five shots, picking up five groundballs and forcing a turnover. Mason's Taylor Carpentier finished with seven saves.
Davidson closes the weekend out with a 1 p.m. game Sunday against six-time A-10 champion UMass.
