DAVIDSON, N.C. – Just prior to the contest being called due to severe weather, Davidson's Valeriy Sviderskiy provided a 78th minute equalizer as the Wildcats and Belmont Abbey played to a 1-1 draw in non-conference men's soccer action Friday evening at Alumni Stadium.
Earning it's second tie of the season, Davidson remains unbeaten moving to 2-0-2, while the Crusaders are now 0-1-2.
"Full credit to the coaches and players of Belmont Abbey," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "Their effort, conviction and play were very good tonight. And their goal took great vision and accuracy from such a distance."
After both teams failed to capitalize on a number of chances in the opening half, Jordan Gardner gave Belmont Abbey a 1-0 lead with a shot from just shy of midfield that caught Wildcat keeper Andrew Kenneson off his line.
Sviderskiy's second goal in as many contests came off two well-played balls from Shane Macnamara and Nathan Marder.
"I am glad that we kept our composure enough to get the goal, which was a really good combination between Shane, Nathan and Val. Ideally the game would have continued as I sense our level was rising," Spear said.
In addition to finishing with a 14-13 edge in shots, the Wildcats held a commanding 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"For us, we created a lot of chances especially with tons of crosses, but the final piece was escaping us. Overall we were more disjointed than usual."
The Wildcats will wrap up their homestand Tuesday when Wake Forest comes to town for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
