LIVE STATS
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Nationally-ranked Davidson will hit the road for the first time this season when it travels to Liberty Saturday for a noon contest.
"We now take our show on the road, which is great," said head coach Matt Spear. "The whole team will travel, departing this evening after classes and a light training session, yoga, and dinner. The time away from campus on the bus, in the hotel, eating meals, and competing at a different venue are important for the team to connect and rise; and for the first-year players to gain a deeper grasp on the college game."
Ranked for the first time since 2009, the Wildcats are off to a four-game unbeaten streak for the second straight season as they enter 2-0-2.
"Our national ranking is flattering. For us, it underlines our solid start and it amplifies our important opening win over Cal Poly, who is unbeaten since, including a win at N.C. State and tie at top-ranked UCLA. But it's one day and one game at a time. We want to keep developing - the best teams build week by week, and keep any hurdles and outside distractions separate. Focus, compete, grow, enjoy."
Valeriy Sviderskiy (2G, 1A) and Alan Reiter (2G, 1A) lead the Davidson attack with five total points each. In addition, the Wildcats have been very impressive at the defensive end allowing just four goals in as many contests.
Like Davidson, Liberty is off to an unbeaten start at 4-0-1, including wins over Robert Morris (W, 2-1) and USC Upstate (W, 3-1) at the Jay Sculley Memorial Tournament last weekend.
"Liberty is undefeated too, and they will be eager and focused. Coach Jeff Alder is quality and his team will be ready."
In addition to three players with two goals each, the Flames are averaging just under three goals per game, while allowing just five on the season.
The Wildcats lead the all-time series 4-3, including a 2-0 blanking of Liberty last season at Alumni Stadium. Prior to last year's contest, Davidson and the Flames hadn't met on the pitch since the 1999 campaign.
"We were good in last year's win over Liberty – it was a commanding win. It provides a foundation and backdrop, but it's also ancient history and this is a brand new opportunity for both teams."
Davidson will continue its four-game road swing Wednesday evening with a 7 p.m. kickoff at No. 7 Virginia.
