DAVIDSON, N.C. – Off to its best start since the 1982 season and ranked as high as No. 15 in the national polls, unbeaten Davidson will play its first-ever Atlantic 10 men's soccer contest Saturday evening at Dayton.
Just one of four unbeaten (UC-Irvine, Penn State, George Mason) teams remaining in the country, the Wildcats enter 5-0-2 following a 3-1 victory at in-state foe Campbell over the weekend. With the game tied late in the contest, Davidson got goals from Alan Reiter (75') and Drew Brown (76') to secure the win.
"We are excited about the start of our season and the positive recognition," said head coach Matt Spear. "We won't deny that it's fun for us, and a source of pride and inspiration for our alumni, parents, Davidson and followers. There is no need to over analyze it, but what is working is the focus on our own game, our own style and what we can control such as work rate, competitiveness, poise and unity."
Reiter, who was named the conference player of the week on Monday, leads the Wildcats with four goals and 10 total points. Forwards Valeriy Sviderskiy and Maxi Pragnell have scored a pair goals and set up two more, while Shane Macnamara has a team-best three assists.
As a team, Davidson is averaging two goals per outing and has surrendered just seven on the season.
Junior goalkeeper Matt Pacifici is enjoying his best season in a Wildcat uniform with a 0.90 goals-against-average, 5-0-1 record and two shutouts.
"The goal each day is to push, expand, get better and to believe in ourselves. So it's an on-going development, process and experience with excellence as the goal," commented Spear.
Playing for the first time as conference opponents, Davidson claimed the only previous meeting against Dayton, 2-1 (2OT), at the UNCG adidas Classic, Sept. 9, 2007.
The Flyers come in 4-3-2 overall after a 2-2 draw at Valparaiso, which the Wildcats also played to a tie earlier this season. In addition, both Dayton and Davidson recorded shutout wins over Jacksonville.
Like the Wildcats, Dayton has a balanced attack with 10 different players scoring and has been solid on the defensive end allowing just seven goals (0.78 per game) through the first nine contests.
Davidson will continue its exciting season Friday, Oct. 10 when No. 8 Saint Louis visits Alumni Stadium for a 7 p.m. A-10 match.
