WASHINGTON, D.C. – Playing their second-to-last regular season road game, the Davidson women's soccer team was unable to overcome a George Washington penalty kick late in the first half and the Wildcats fell 1-0 Friday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field in Atlantic 10 play.
The 'Cats (4-10-1, 1-3 A-10) dropped their third straight 1-0 contest in league action, while falling for the sixth time overall in one-goal decisions. The Colonials pushed their unbeaten streak to three in a row and moved to 9-3-1 overall (2-1-1 A-10).
The game-winner came at the 36:15 mark when GW drew a foul in the goalie box to set up a PK. Emily Brown took it and kicked the free shot to the right post past a diving Rachel Locke for the 1-0 lead.
Davidson came out aggressive in the second half, getting five of its six total shots in the period, but was unable to convert on its attempts. Dani Johnson, with about nine minutes left in regulation, hit a header off a corner kick, but the shot went right into the arms of Miranda Horn.
Then with a minute and a half left, the 'Cats got another corner kick, but came up empty, before Becca Fisher with 38 ticks remaining, fired off a shot that was again saved by Horn.
GW's keeper finished three saves, while Locke added to her A-10-best 75 saves with a pair of stops.
The Wildcats play their final regular season road contest Sunday at Virginia Commonwealth at 3:30 p.m. It will be both schools first time facing each other.
