CHARLESTON, S.C. – Andrew Barna finished a triple short of the cycle and drove in two runs to lead Davidson past The Citadel, 6-4, in Game 1 of a Southern Conference baseball doubleheader on another windy day Saturday at Riley Park. The rubber match for the three-game series began at 4 p.m.

Winds were sustained above 20 miles per hour blowing out to right field, and both teams took advantage of it, combining for five home runs.

Shortstop Michael Zeblo also drove in a pair of runs for Davidson (14-30, 9-17 SoCon) doing so on a two-run home run and going 2-for-4 for the game, while right fielder Nathan Becker went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

The game was tied 3-3 until Davidson went ahead in the seventh inning on an RBI-single by Becker that drove in Barna, who had led the inning off with a double. Lowe and Barna then hit RBI-singles in the eighth for a 6-3 lead.

Catcher Joe Jackson hit two home runs and walked three times to lead The Citadel (28-20, 15-8 SoCon), while first baseman Calvin Orth went 2-for-4 with a home run, and shortstop Jonathan Stokes went 2-for-3. Jackson hit a solo home run off RHP Matt Saeta (2) to pull the Bulldogs within two with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Saeta then allowed the winning run to step to the plate, but induced a groundout to complete a two-inning save.

Jackson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning for the first run of the game, but Barna answered with his 10th home run of the season in the top of the second, taking advantage of the wind to the opposite field. The Citadel went back ahead with an RBI-single by right fielder Brett Bullard (1-for-4) in the bottom half of the second, but Zeblo hit a two-run home run, going opposite field as well, for a 3-2 Davidson lead.

Orth tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo shot to center just over the wall. The next two innings were scoreless until Becker drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh.

RHP Danny Mooney (5-4) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings for the win. LHP Logan Cribb allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts, also in 6 1/3 innings.

RHP Jip Richards relieved Mooney in the seventh inning, and, after walking the first batter he faced to load the bases, retired the next two batters to get Davidson out of the jam. The Bulldogs stranded a total of 11 base runners for the game, while the 'Cats stranded just three.
