Samford Claims First Game of Baseball Doubleheader

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A pair of five-run innings led Samford past Davidson in the first game of a Southern Conference doubleheader Thursday at Griffin Field. First pitch of the second game was at 7:10 p.m. CT.
 
The loss eliminated Davidson (16-31, 10-18 SoCon) from contention for a berth in the Southern Conference baseball tournament, as the win was all Samford (27-26, 12-15 SoCon) needed to clinch the eighth and final berth over ninth-place Davidson.
 
Third baseman David Daniels went 2-for-4 to lead the Wildcats, while RHP/DH Ryan Lowe and first baseman Andrew Barna had the 'Cats lone RBI.
 
Right fielder Patrick McGavin led the Bulldogs by going 3-for-5 with four RBI, while left fielder Christiaan Durdaller went 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBI. Designated hitter C.K. Irby and third baseman Tommy Corbin each had two hits with two RBI.
 
After scoring two runs with just one hit in the first inning, Samford drove in five in the third inning. Irby drove in two with a single to left field, and he later scored on a single by McGavin. Catcher Drew McWhorter added another run with a sacrifice fly, and Corbin hit an RBI-single to cap the scoring.
 
LHP Eric Wright (5-3) was perfect the first time through Davidson's order, despite surrendering several deep fly outs, but the Wildcats pounded out three consecutive hits in the fourth inning to score their first run. The last of which was a double by Lowe that drove in shortstop Michael Zeblo (1-for-4), who had doubled, and then Barna followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in centerfielder Forrest Brandt (1-for-4), who had singled.
 
The fifth and sixth innings were scoreless, but the Bulldogs scored five more in the bottom of the seventh inning, led by a pair of two-RBI hits by McGavin and Durdaller, and then two more in the eighth for the final margin.
 
Wright pitched five innings, surrendering two runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout, and then RHP Andres Garcia and RHP C.K. Irby held the Wildcats scoreless over the last four innings. For Davidson, Lowe (4-8) only went two-plus innings, surrendering five runs on two hits and four walks with one strikeout. He was relieved by LHP Rob Bain, who allowed two runs on six hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings.
 
The two teams will conclude the three-game series Friday at 4 p.m. CT/5 p.m. ET.
