SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally past Davidson, 4-3, in Southern Conference baseball action on a rainy Saturday at Russell C. King Field.
With runners on the corners and one out, centerfielder Clark Wise (3-for-4, BB) tied the game with a bunt that scored the runner from third. The runners on first and second then advanced on a wild pitch during shortstop Alec Paradowski's at-bat, forcing the 'Cats to intentionally walk him to create a double play situation. Right fielder Josh Hyman (2-for-4) was able to send the ball deep to right field in the next at-bat though to drive in the game-winning run.
The game, which started at 1 p.m., was delayed exactly five hours for rain starting after the fourth inning at 2:15 p.m, and did not conclude until 8:39 p.m.
An RBI-double by third baseman Seth Neely (1-for-4) in the first inning and the same in the second inning by Wise gave Wofford (18-28, 9-15 SoCon) a 2-0 lead early, but a sacrifice fly by third baseman David Daniels and an RBI-double by shortstop Michael Zeblo (2-for-5) in the third inning tied the game for Davidson (13-29, 8-16 SoCon) at 2-2.
After the delay, Zeblo broke the tie in the seventh inning with an RBI-double, and RHP Matt Saeta pitched a career-high four innings, scattering three hits and a walk and striking out four, while holding Wofford scoreless to give the 'Cats the one-run advantage entering the bottom of the ninth. Zeblo (1-2) moved from shortstop to the mound to close it out, but was tagged with his second loss of the season after allowing both runs, of which only one was earned
LHP J.D. Osborne (2-1) earned the win after pitching the final 2 2/3 innings for Wofford, striking out seven and surrendering just two hits. RHP Danny Mooney started for Davidson and held Wofford to two runs (one earned) on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts in the first four innings, but did not return after the rain delay.
Catcher Daniel Gerow was the only other Wildcat to post a two-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a sacrifice.
Davidson has the week off and will next play at The Citadel, starting a three-game SoCon series Friday at 6 p.m.
Note: RHP/DH Ryan Lowe was one of 25 players named to the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List Sunday by the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
