Postgame Interview with Coach Turner

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior midfielder Annie Evans tallied her fourth goal of the season with 13 minutes to play to lead the Davidson field hockey team past Radford by a score of 1-0 in a key NorPac contest at Belk Turf Field on Friday night.

The win moves the Wildcats to 8-10 on the season and 5-2 in conference play. They currently sit one game behind Liberty, whose win over Appalachian State on Friday puts them at 13-5 overall and 6-1 in the NorPac. Radford falls to 2-16 on the year and 2-6 in the league.

Despite a strong effort in particular by the 'Cats, neither team found the back of the net for the first 56 minutes of play. Davidson got 14 shots off in the first half, including several strong ones by freshman Melissa Funsten, but solid play by RU keeper Sidney Encarnacion kept the 'Cats off the board.

The Wildcats were awarded eight penalty corners in the first half, but could not convert the corners into scoring opportunities. Funsten had a pair of shots, with the Highlanders making the block on one and Encarnacion coming up with the save on the other. Finley Amato and Tyler McFayden each had a shot as well, but were also stymied by Encarnacion.

Down the other end, Sarah Fisher made five stops on the night to earn her second shutout victory of the season. She was aided in the backfield by the duo of Madeline Herder and Madison Parrish, who intercepted a number of Highlanders' passes to keep Radford from getting shots off. The Wildcats would finish the game outshooting the Highlanders 22-8.

In the 57th minutes of action, Evans carried the ball around the RU defenders and into the circle. She would then lift the shot in for the score, giving the Wildcats the 1-0 lead.

The 'Cats attempted to cushion the lead with a pair of shots by Amato, but neither found its way in. A strong Davidson defense left the Highlanders unable to get a shot of for the rest of the game as the Wildcats picked up the crucial win.

Amato's seven shot attempts led the 'Cats, while Funsten and Evans each finished with five apiece. Parrish earned a defensive save, and Davidson out-cornered Radford 12-5 in the contest.

Stacey Mackintosh had three shots for the Highlanders, while Encarnacion finished the night with 14 saves. Alayna Versage picked up a defensive save as well.

The Wildcats return to Belk Turf Field on Friday when they host Liberty in another key NorPac contest. The team will also celebrate Senior Day prior to the game, which is slated for 1 p.m.
