DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Liberty Flames scored with just over a minute left to play as the Davidson field hockey team took a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to finish out the regular season at Belk Turf Field on Sunday afternoon.
At 8-11 overall and 5-3 in league action, the Wildcats will enter the NorPac tournament as the No. 3 seed in the Eastern division. Their opponent will be determined by the results of Sunday's Western division games. The Flames move to 14-5 overall and 7-1 in the NorPac, winning the East division of the conference.
Prior to game, seniors Finley Amato, Madison Parrish, Brit Donaldson, Annie Evans and Sarah Fisher were honored. Amato was also acknowledged as the program's all-time leader in points and goals. She would then record two assists in the contest to tie for first place all-time in that category with 23 career assists.
Davidson struck first, tallying a goal just under 11 minutes into the contest to take a 1-0 lead. Amato sent a pass over to Evans, who deflected it in for her fifth of the season. It marks her second consecutive game with a goal as Evans scored the game-winner in Friday's 1-0 win over Radford.
The Flames struck back soon after to tie the game at 1-1. Abbey Basom fed a penalty corner pass to Natalie Barr, who dribbled into the circle and sent it in for the score.
Tyler McFayden put the 'Cats back in front midway through the second half at 2-1. McFayden tipped a high pass from Amato into the net for her fourth of the season.
However, the Flames would then score the next two goals of the game. Just two minutes later, Mercedes Cox scored off a pass from Basom to even the score at 2-2. Then with just over a minute to play, Barr tallied her second of the contest to give the Flames the 3-2 win.
Liberty outshot the Wildcats 18-10 and out-cornered the 'Cats 7-6. Fisher made 12 stops on the day, with Parrish recording her second defensive save of the season.
Amato was the 'Cats team leader with four shots on the afternoon, including two on goal. McFayden had two shots, while four other Davidson players each recorded an attempt as well.
The Wildcats will head to the 2012 NorPac Championship this week. Their first game will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, when they will face the No. 2 seed in the Western division.
