DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team hung right with No. 16 Louisville in a back-and-forth battle into the final minutes, but the Cardinals struck twice late to break a 3-3 tie and take a 5-3 win over the Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.

Katlyn Soucy scored the game-winner for Louisville (2-1) with just under seven minutes remaining. Davidson (1-1) was unable to clear the ball after a penalty corner, and Soucy flicked a rebound off a Sarah Fisher save into the back of the cage. Hayley Turner added her second goal of the game in the final minute to ice the win, with Caitlin Collins earning the assist.

“I'm disappointed in the final score because we had a lot of opportunities to put the ball in the cage and win, but this was the best we've played this season,” said head coach Ginny Turner. “We fixed some things from our game last week and came very close to defeating the 16th-ranked team in the country. There are a couple more things we can work on and we'll be right with the top-20 teams.”

Senior Christine Rua, junior Finley Amato and senior Krista Jackson all scored goals for the Wildcats, with Amato also tallying an assist on Rua's goal.

Jackson's second career goal tied the game at three in the 61st minute. Junior Annie Evans started the play on a penalty corner and Jackson hit a high shot from the top of the circle that deflected off a Louisville defender's stick and went over goalkeeper Erin Conrad.

The Wildcats were the first on the scoreboard as Rua deflected an Amato shot from the top of the circle past the keeper in the seventh minute. The lead was short-lived as Louisville's Haley Jurich flipped the ball over Fisher in the ninth minute after receiving a pass from Heather Stevens. Erin Schneidtmiller gave Louisville a 2-1 lead in the final minute of the first half after collecting a rebound off a blocked shot and ripping it into the back of the cage.

Amato evened the game at 2-2 in the fifth minute of the second half, weaving her way through the Louisville defense and rolling it past Conrad into the cage. Turner's first goal of the game put the Cardinals back on top, as Mallory Mason and Heather Stevens connected on passes off a corner to get her the ball near the left post.

Jackson evened the game late for Davidson, but the Cardinals scored twice to take the victory.

Both goalkeepers made six saves. Louisville's Alyssa Voelmle was credited with a defensive save after denying Evans on a 1-on-1 attempt in the 54th minute.

Louisville outshot Davidson 18-14, and took a 10-5 advantage in corners. Turner led Louisville with five shots and Collins had four. Amato and Rua led Davidson with four shots each.

The Wildcats will hit the road for their next four games, taking on William & Mary (Sept. 10), VCU (Sept. 11), No. 17 Albany (Sept. 17) and Siena (Sept. 18). Their next game at Belk Turf Field will be Saturday, Sept. 24 at 12 p.m. against Robert Morris.
