WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Tyler McFayden's first career goal was an important one, as it gave the Davidson field hockey team a 2-1 double-overtime victory over William & Mary Saturday afternoon at Busch Stadium.
McFayden, a Charlotte, N.C. native and Charlotte Country Day graduate, broke free down the left side of the field in 7-on-7 play and scored on the charging goalkeeper at 91:30, halfway through the second overtime period.
The score was knotted at 1-1 after William & Mary was able to even the score early in the second half, as Leah Zamesnik tipped a shot by Christine Johnson off a corner in the 42nd minute.
"It was a really hard fought and physical game by both teams," said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner, a William & Mary alum. "For the fans, it was a fun game to watch because it was such a fast-paced, intense game."
Senior Gray Robinson had given Davidson a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute off a penalty corner. Junior Finley Amato's initial shot was blocked, but Robinson found the rebound and fired from 10 yards out for the goal.
Shots were nearly even during the first half, with William & Mary holding a 10-9 advantage, but the Tribe held a 7-3 advantage in the second half. Play was even in the overtime periods, with Davidson holding a 4-3 shot advantage.
"We didn't waver when they tied it up, and it was evident in our play how much we wanted the win," Turner added. "It was a total team effort today and I am so proud of how hard they played all the way through the second overtime."
Junior goalkeeper Sarah Fisher made seven stops for the 'Cats, while Camilla Hill made eight stops for the Tribe.
Amato led the 'Cats in shots with six, while Zamesnik led William & Mary with seven.
The Wildcats return to action at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at VCU.
