VCU Edges Davidson Field Hockey, 2-1

RICHMOND, Va.
– Junior Finley Amato's goal was not enough, as VCU claimed a 2-1 win over Davidson in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field.

All of the scoring took place in a four-minute span in the second half, with a VCU (1-4) penalty corner goal proving to be the difference. Melanie Marotta tallied the game-winner in the 54th minute, with Kelsey Scherrer and Stephanie DeMasi earning the assists.

“We had a lot of opportunities but just could not find the back of the cage,” said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. “VCU is a very physical team and they turned on the speed in the second half, and after double OT yesterday, we just could not hang on in the end to tie it or take the lead.”

Nicola Breeman scored the game's first goal in the 51st minute with Kayla Mueller earning the assist. Amato tied the game in the 53rd minute with sophomore Tyler McFayden earning the helper, but VCU struck again just over a minute later with Marotta's penalty corner goal.

The Wildcats played a strong first half, but were unable to convert on their scoring chances.

VCU held a slim advantage in shots, 12-10. Erin Jablonski made six saves for VCU, while Davidson junior Sarah Fisher made three saves.

Davidson will play its next two games on the road as well, taking on No. 17 Albany and Siena Saturday and Sunday. The 'Cats return to Belk Turf Field Saturday, Sept. 24 to host Robert Morris.
